I'm flying to Sydney in December with my girlfriend for 3 weeks, during our stay we are planning a 5 day break to Fraser Island. We want to hire a 4wd for Fraser Island and stay at one of the resorts there. Can you tell me who you used for the vehicle on Fraser Island & prices. Thanks.

I used Aussie Trax 4x4 and it cost about $450 for the day including the ferry, vehicle access permit and the vehicle itself. This was based on 3 people.

It was a bit of a rush doing it in one day but I struggle to see how you'd fill 5 days on Fraser Island. Perhaps do a two day tour with a night camping or something? It's a great place but spending 5 days there means you'll lose out on seeing other things especially if you are spending only 3 weeks in Australia.

Are you spending most of the 3 weeks in Sydney? Fraser Island is North of Brisbane, it's some 1000km from Sydney.

Thanks for the advice. Correction (spoke to GF - the boss:-) we will stay 3 nights (4 days) on the Island and are in the process of looking at accommodation and vehicle costs etc. We will stay in Sydney at a friends flat and travel from there. If you don't mind I will fire you an email at some point with more Auz. related questions. Great write up and pics.

How do you camp in australia? Just out in the open? Tent hire? etc

Proper campsites run by the national park authorities on places like Fraser Island. On Fraser, all the campsites are enclosed in fences to keep wild Dingo's out.

I still think 4 days is a bit much, you can probably fill 4 days on Fraser but obviously the law of diminishing returns applies - by day 3 you are seeing more of the same and could probably better spend the time seeing other great places in the area.

It's possible that it's changed since I was there (2007) but we just pulled up in one of the little areas off the main beach and set up our tent there.
I know there were some dedicated camping areas, but we were told you could pretty much camp anywhere.

Agreed that 3 nights there is too much. We did 2 days, one night and to be honest that was plenty. While it's a great place there's only so much you can do there.

We booked through Palace Adventures, they provide the 4x4 loaded with all the camping equipment and a massive cool box for the food and beer.

Another good writeup, looks like an awesome few weeks.

Was speaking to my friend last night who's emigrating and we got onto the subject of cars. Apparently he's looking at Kia Rios, circa 2005.... fail :(
 
Haha, my wife just bought herself a Kia Rio (though a 2009 one). Its not a bad little car actually.

Little 1.3 thats perfect for running about town.

Engine is alomst 1/3 of the size of our previous car ... 1996 3.8L 6 pot VT Commodore Wagon.
There is definitely a trend here for a downgrade from 6 cylinder to 4 Cylinder cars. Shame really... would love a V8 Falcon Ute
 
Good read again, I really do want to visit Australia after reading this thread.

I especially enjoyed your 'Go places guys...' recommendation (I realise what you meant really though).

Well I said it because doesn't everybody already know going out is a more enjoyable way to live your life? ;) (the answer is no they don't)

I assumed it was directed to those forum members among us (especially as this is a rather 'geeky' forum) that there really is more to life than PCs/cars and experiences are worth 1000x more than having any nice car/PC can bring (if you have to choose between them). I hope this is what you meant anyhow, haha.

Of course ideally we'd like to get the best of both worlds...

I enjoyed reading both parts of your trip report from Aussie.
I actually live in Melbourne :)
Just want to inform you, that we actually do have Automatic climate control, its just not bog standard, and only get it in the advanced versions of the cars. For instance in the Commodore range you it is optional in the Berlina and Standard in the Calais, and then Standard in the statesman and the Caprice.
We also have Automatic wipers but also only in the advanced versions such as the Berlina, Calais, Statesman, Caprice.

I know that they have climate control in the advanced versions of the Falcon, but not sure about Automatic wipers in the Falcons.
Sorry, but im a Holden fanboy :P

Thanks for the reply, I spent a week in Melbourne and thought it was a fantastic city :)

My second Falcon (FG?) did have digital climate, but yea, the Commodore was a lowly Omega!
