my sis asked me to post this Q. (I've given her a link so she can read the answers)

'I have already travelled from Sydney to Cairns and am now returning to Australia for a 2 week holiday but I dont want to visit the same places. I am thinking of flying into Perth and driving up the West Coast but I dont want to spend most of my 2 weeks in the car. I also considered Flying into Sydney and going south but am not sure what there is to see on the South Coast. Any advice on how to best spend the 2 weeks?' :)

Melbourne!!! (but then I'm biased, since I'm originally from there :) )

Melbourne is a great place to visit, but I'm not sure you could spend 2 weeks site seeing there. Add in parts of Victoria and she could easily fill those 2 weeks.

The east coast south of Sydney has some great coastline and lots to see, but I guess it will suffer from the same problems as the west coast (too much time spent in the car)

Another option for your sis is to do Melbourne and parts of Victoria (Great Ocean Road, the Grampians, Phillip Island to name a few places) for a week or so, then take the ferry down to Tasmania for another week. Tasmania has some awesome natural beauty and is worth the trip, but can be boring if she wants some night life.

Perth and Freemantle are nice, but I'm not sure that there is two weeks worth there. Problem is, there is not much north, south, east or west of Perth for approx 4000 miles :p

As Dante says, Melbourne is a top place to visit, and the surrounding areas of Victoria are well worth a look. Would she consider a two-stage holiday, combining both? Internal flights in Oz are dirt cheap......

The drive from Sydney to Melbourne (or further) will give you/her a lot more to look at, but it would only take about 9 hours if she didnt stop. Driving from Perth, up the westcoast will take longer, but with nothing to see on the way. If she wants to stretch the distance she's willing to travel, she could take the Syndey >> Melbourne >> Boganville (Adelaide) route.

I'd agree with dante.

Possibly she could fly to Melbourne and see Philip Island (yes the penguins are that cute), Great Ocean Road, Grampian, then drive to Adelaide and do the wine regions.

Fly from there to Perth (or cheap airline to Fremantle) and see Perth and Fremantle, and possible Margaret River,

Boganville (Adelaide) route.

If you stay away from Port Adelaide, Salsbury and Elizibeth its perfectly fine.
Not a bogansville. Only those 3 suburbs are ****.
There is the Targa Tasmania in Tasmania soon. She might get to see the 2 headed people but if she liked cars then that might be a good thing to go and watch :)

How about...

Fly into melbourne, hire a car and get off down the great ocean road - through the rainforest, through the coastal towns (cheesy tbh but fun), go as far as port fairy then double back to warrambool and head upto the grampians.

Walk up a mountain (the wonderland walk right in halls gap (starting at the camp site) has amazing views and isn't too hard - take water), then head back to melbourne on the highway.

spend a few days seeing the sights in Melbourne - puffing billy, philip island, take a boat up the yarra, maybe even visit some vineyards (they're a full day but lovely scenery).

You need to see Tassy, it's gorgeous. Considering where you are (melbourne) I'd suggest taking the ferry over as a foot passenger, spend the night in a cabin after a few drinks in the bar and walk out into devonport in the morning - better than smelly airports.

Hire a car there, if you can work a deal to leave it in hobart that would be cool as you could see more of Tas without worrying about doubling back on yourself. Fly back from Hobart or catch the return ferry.

Last night in Melbourne are upto you, maybe try the casino?

I did a west coast drive from Perth to Canarvon and back again about 10 years ago.

I really liked Perth and thought it was better than Melbourne or Sydney in some ways. A day trip to Rotnest Island is essential. There are a few things of interest along the way however but it is a LOT of driving.

Monkey Mia
Pinnacles
Ningaloo Reef
Shark Bay

The other posters are correct in that there's probably not 2 weeks worth unless you can spend a lot of it sitting on a beach.
