Australian Grand Prix 2013, Melbourne - Race 1/19

You have to wonder why he was so easily overtaken by the front runners throughout the race.

Was it because he was driving a slow and steady strategy to make a two-stop work or was there something more fundamental.

.

Ross brawn claims a lot of time was lost with the compromised strategy and driving to a too slow delta also worth noting is that the merc was very slow during the race, maybe running a wet set-up? Well for whatever reason neither of the mercs got anyway near the top half of the speed trap table and even the red bulls had enough of a top speed advantage to simply walk past.

I think you will find that Lewis was fastest through the speed trap in quali at 193.3 mph vimto was 6th with a 191.1 mph

He was talking about the race :)

As you well know the fastest times are in quli. As for the race it's down tire strategies.
And it's been already said that if Merc went for a 3 stopper from the start Lewis would have got 3rd or 4th.

But I still don't expect Merc to be up there for at least another 4-5 races.

I know qual is faster but he was talking about the race, not qual :)

We have no idea how a 3 stop would have worked for Lewis or if they could have done a 3 stop without excess tyre wear so to assume where he would be is fruitless.

Also pretty sure the 2 stop race was the quickest strategy said Martin, and see Kimi on a 2 stop breezed past Lewis round the outside.

That comes under the heading of tire strategies.
So lotus is very good in cold conditions everyone else not so good or they would have gone for a 2 stopper.

obvious is obvious. It's going to be a long season :(

Considering Lewis was only 12 seconds behind Massa at the end, and they were clearly trying for a 2 stop through the race and therefore aiming at lower lap delta's for the first half of the race i think he could well have beaten Massa if they went for a 3 stop from the start.

I dont think he would have got on the podium though

Yep it's on you tube the radio from Rob to Massa for the race. Told no threat from behind to manage the rear tyres and bring it home basically.

Thanks for the link, forgot about the vids. Nice change to the Mclaren pitstop, as pointed out during the race, where the driver now is dropped with the wheels spinning to get away quicker :)

Interesting point on that. I watched some of the V8 Supercar races from Melbourne and spinning the wheels while up on the jacks is against the rules in that series as its deemed dangerous, and doing it carries a drive through penalty.

That's with enclosed wheel arches. I imagine the risks for F1 would be greater so it would only takeba small incident for it to be banned in F1 too.

Its a little surprising it isnt banned already in F1 - its an accident waiting to happen (as Im sure whatever is required will be with majority of the pitlane before the end of the seaosn , even if its only worth 0.05s /stop lol)

As with most things, it will need something to happen before its banned. One slow wheel nut on a rear and a gun getting ripped from a mechanics hand and it will be gone.

F1 pitstop regulations, especially for the years when they had refueling, are far more lapse than a lot of other series. Men in the pitlane before the car arrives, refuelling while doing other things, a huge number of mechanics, and now freely spinning wheels while in the air, all things that have been banned elsewhere.

But then again, the super fast pitstops are part of F1. It would lose something if they took 15 seconds to change the wheels.
