Australian Grand Prix 2014, Melbourne - Race 1/19

Putting all your eggs in one basket a bit isn't it? Throwing away your get out of jail free card if you screw up your gear ratios to instead gamble on just 1 race?

And there is nothing wise about Prat 'integrity' Symonds. It makes a mockery of F1 that he's even allowed in the circuit. But that's a discussion for another day.

During FP2 and 3 we had a brief view of the new on-screen-graphics of the engine revs/throttle/brake/G-force etc.
We had two laps with Button and Vettle (so both Renault and Mercedes engines) on fast laps and not once did the revs pass 11.5k.

I thought this was due to reliability/longevity/testing etc but according to the tech notes later it was mentioned that 'we are unlikely' to see more revs than that as the fuel-flow won't provide any more power for the revs.

This can't be right, can it? Melbourne is being classed as a 'fuel heavy' circuit, so is it just for this race?

What's the point of the 15k limit if they're not going past 12k?

I think I remember reading or hearing that because of the fuel flow rate restriction of 100kg/hr, you physically can't get enough fuel in to the engine past 12k rpm to make any more power, so all the engine manufacturers have engineered it around the 12k rpm mark and geared it all appropriately around that.

I suspect that whoever set the rules regarding rev limit and fuel flow limit didn't think it through in enough detail or didn't make enough of a connection between flow rate and rpm. Perhaps they underestimated the power that the teams would get out of the engines and thought they'd only manage to get the power closer to 15k rpm rather than lower down.

Shame really, we'd get a more interesting sound going up to 15k.

Jeez. we've got two British drivers in F1, why all the hate? I took a couple of years out of these forums (and the F1 forum) due to pointless bickering, we haven't had the first race yet!

Drunkenmeister, you talk a lot of sense, but why the Button hatred? Fp means nothing, qually means everything (it would seem), yet Button scored twice the points of Perez last year, what exactly is your point?

I recall the same here when Button joined McLaren "He'll be humiliated, destroyed, emasculated" but he wasn't. Why all the hatred? It's tiresome and we've not had the first race yet.

Welcome to ocuk , lots of button haters for some unknown reason...

Looking at how much more Hamilton is having to do to keep the car pointing forward, I can see it being much more difficult for incoming female drivers to do race distances. Last year, the cars were pretty much on rails with the downforce and limited torque, so it was relatively easy for Susie Wolf to do that test; she only had to cope with g-force. I can imagine it will require much more effort and strength from her when she does the tests later this year, especially if it is wet.

Not read the whole thread (intentionally avoided it as I didn't want spoilers) but does everyone agree that they really need to up the volume of the cars? :p

The problem with doing that is that the sound is picked up by the trackside mics. If they up the volume for the engine noise it will also up the volume of everything else, so the crowd noise would be deafening (you heard the volume of the crowd when DR took provisional pole?). It might also be loud enough to pick up swearing or other things not for broadcast :p

Actually it wasn't me, someone had to point out that Button was way ahead and it wasn't his fault again. I actually corrected someone who in there enthusiasm to suggest how brilliant he was claimed he beat Mag in Q1, Q2 and only lost out in Q3 due to a yellow....... correcting someone making bold and ridiculous claims doesn't mean hate. I was simply pointing out the fairly simple facts of Button was behind in Q1 and further behind in Q2.

Button "defenders" automatically assume that everyone who doesn't kiss Button's arse hates him. Can you point out anywhere in my posts where I showed "hate" for Button even in the slightest?

As for points, what has Perez's points got to do with anything. Again I was pointing out someone else's quite ludicrous claims and the Button fan brigade jumped down my throat, again for posting nothing rude or mean against Button in the slightest.

Practice is a worthless measure of performance because we don't know what their goals are, it's as simple as that. WE can guess but can't know, when it comes to qualifying while there is some room for the specific goal, it's down to the point of the weekend where you can pretty much generalise that everyone has chosen their preferred setup and is going as fast as they can.

Perez isn't seen as having a great year, Perez after getting used to the car quite easily and consistently out qualified Button(as did Hamilton). I was merely pointing out that a yellow flag didn't cause the 1.2 second gap between Mag and Button, 2/10ths and getting into Q3, maybe, 1.2seconds, nope.

What this forum needs, REALLY badly, beyond anything else, is not assuming every single post that isn't 100% praise automatically means complete hatred and must be defended to the death. Again, be reasonable, read my posts, is there even a hint of Button hatred, or do a few people respond to every post with "must defend to the death" mentality and for some reason insist in interpreting everything as pure hate.

It's not just your retort to my post though, I've read countless posts of yours where you bring up Button when no one is even discussing him! And every time it's always in a negative light, like you can't help but mention him.

I agree with what you have said but you do the exact same with Hamilton. You seem to go for him because people go for button.

Mate is coming over at 5:45 for some early morning F1.

Got the iPad charged up to distract my daughter. That said, she liked the "red car" and sat watching qually earlier, so maybe I've converted her (shes 3).
