Australian Grand Prix 2016, Melbourne - Race 1/21

As there is a minimum weight for the car and driver there is no overall weight saving. You may be able to mount a small amount of ballast low down though, to improve things.

Exactly. The car won't be lighter, they will just have slightly more headroom in terms of ballast and where they locate it.

If there was a meaningful benefit then every team would run the cars in bare carbon.

It is nice to see Jordan back on the track :p

For F1 0.5Kg is a good saving, I am surprised more people didn't go the matte route earlier.

Might not be as simple as that. Could be that the matte finish is slightly more abrasive to the air flowing round it making it slightly slower. Just me speculating though.

There's not much reason to paint it if they were really mad about aiming to save weight. When I was in Formula Student, we hardly had any paint on our car at all. Nearly all of it was bare carbon! :D

According to RedBull, they were saying their matte car is more slippery through the air. Don't know how much difference it would actually make though.

I wonder how that's influenced some of their aero work if true. These cars rely on air being attached to a surface so it can be fed into another piece of aero. It's why we don't have a field of cars with golf ball dimples on. I wonder if they've glossed specific channels.

I agree the Renault is a beautiful blast of fresh air in a sea of stagnation
To be fair Ferrari have a striking livery especially when more scarlet
Williams is a nice design

Rest, don't really do it for me.. Especially sauber.. Yuck

But so much grey is crazy
Manor
Haas
Mercedes
Mclaren

All a bit meh

I really really wanted to see the special edition Renault livery in action. I'll see if I can find it

Just watched the press conference, our UK press really are gutter press.
not one asked questions on F1, they were just looking for a headline about the Snapchat vid etc, no interest in F1 at all
