Auto Express / Evo Critic done for speeding

If someone pulled out of a junction on him we'd be talking several fatalities at 127mph, vs a nasty wreck and potentially serious injuries at 60-70mph. That's why he's an irresponsible ignoramus and most of you care more about bravado and bragging about your speed than the safety of others.

Well that's it really, isn't it?

You can argue that you're perfectly safe driving at 120mph on public roads in the UK, etc but it's other people that are the problem.

The difference between Germany and the rest of Europe is that other motorists expect you to fly up behind them at 150mph+ so they're (usually) keeping a lookout for that.

Do that anywhere else and you're asking for an accident due to other people's general lack of awareness.

I used to think that I was perfectly safe bombing around at silly speeds but I guess I've grown up.
Kind of boring, come to think of it :p

Yes, the driver is one of those throbbers that care nothing for the safety of their fellow road users.

Unless you have a crystal ball attached to your satnav that predicts whether or not Farmer Giles' tractor or one of his cows is around the next bend, 127mph is a criminally reckless speed on a single carriageway road under any conditions even if you're the Best Driver Ever.

You travel over 130mph on a weekly basis? Seems highly irresponsible unless you live in Australia or Germany.

I cruised at 120-130mph for hours coming back from Denmark last weekend, but the difference is that people expect that in Germany and get the **** out of your way.

They don't do that in the UK, so I'm sorry, but it is dangerous.

I'm no saint, but you can't call exceeding 130mph on a regular basis in the UK safe.

Even driving under the speed limit people misjudge my speed when merging/pulling onto the road i'm on; either that or they think "Heh, it's a new car, it'll have good brakes and he won't want to smash it". This happens so often now, i'm finding I often need to to overtake them as soon as they've pulled on, and i'm often doing only 50 in a 60 at this point.

When i drive slightly faster, i'm often confronted with the very real need to keep braking due to other's driving well under the limit, thus offsetting any progress potential on my part!

What would be the stopping distance of that car at 127mph?

Surely even given the great braking performance of a car like that, the thinking time alone would cover 30-40m?

Hmmm i see it highly possible.
You leave roundabout at 40mph floor it and 130 is there in blink of an eye.

no matter how many times I hear someone say..
It leaves me speechless
..I'm always surprised by how much tripe they continue to spout, despite this declaration of muteness.

Really don't see a huge problem here, he is someone who knows how to drive a car and travelling in a vehicle that is capable of accelerating to and maintaining very high speeds. Being a former racing driver I'm sure he is more than capable of using common sense and drive within his ability and we're not talking drag racing in rush hour traffic here but going fast in what was more than likely an empty stretch of a road very late at night. Imagine if a patrol car was sitting there after midnight then it's probably a regular speeding spot where drivers feel save to put their foot down.

What kills isn't the speed itself but driving too fast for a given situation and again I'm sure he was driving within his ability. As others have said sensation of speed in cars that are build to go fast can definitely feel different as well, I've been in a few where you don't realise just how fast you're going and over a 100mph wouldn't even feel like particularly fast. Just like in my current Jazz, I wouldn't feel safe going above 60 :P

Still silly sod of course and will be dealt with full brunt of the law but hardly a baby killing psycho.

Looking at the facts as presented:

- Ex-racing driver with a lot of experience of driving high performance vehicles and no accidents.
- Driving on a stretch of road which appears to be wide, well surfaced and with good visibility (just going by Streetview)
- Driving a car designed with much higher speeds in mind.
- "one of the north's busiest roads"...at 12.45AM?
- July 10; weather not likely to have been poor.

Weighing all that up, I'd say it probably wasn't really that unsafe.
Bit silly, should have known better - but not the crime of the century.

Yet he didn't see the police that caught him.

Attention was no doubt on the road and whatever was in front of him.... Isnt that where you'd like your attention to be when driving?

Well, focusing solely on the road is a great way of missing any potential hazards approaching from the side...

Lets face it, if he managed to miss a big white/reflective police car/van at the side of the road, he's not exactly going to see a deer or similar about to walk out in front of him ;)
