Automate "Windows XP's Found New Hardware"

OK, here is my frustrating problem...

You know when you plug in a USB FLASH drive and windows would install it all automatically and voila, well, on my PC it dosent do this for anything, ever. It allways prompts the "Found new hardware wizard", it's got quite annying. I have since reinstalled the OS for other issues however this did not rectify the problem at hand.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

if you use nlite and an old ryanvm pack and disabled cat files then you'll def get this problem!

Thanks for your reply. All seems to be in order with regards the Driver signing and Windows Update, however I am not to sure what you are refering to when you mention the terms nlite, ryanvm and cat files. Would it be possible for you to go into further detail regarding these terms?

If you don't know about nLite, RyanVM and cat files then that isn't the problem. nLite lets you remove files and programs you don't want from Windows by working. You do this by copying your XP disc to hard drive and pointing nLite to that folder. You can then "integrate" RyanVM's pack which adds all of the Windows XP Updates. Cat files I think are where drivers are stored.

are you using xp with service pack 2 ?

try running windows update and see if that fixes the problem (along with what i suggested in my first post)

if you've nver heard of nlite, then it definatyl wont be that problem, so ignore it i mentioned it

-the cat files are the windows file protection and driver signing files, with the older ryanvm pack it would replace the usbstor.sys driver and supply a new cat, upon removing the cat, it would give the problems you're getting


-i get the problem you're having with my xp64bit install, but since i only use the same port, its not much of an issue now

I have got all the latest windows uodates and no joy unfortunatly. I don't suppose there are any other ideas out there? I shall continue researching and update here if I find a resolution.

So I take it you haven't tweaked the registry or changed any system settings regarding USB? Just a wild card here but have you got the latest motherboard drivers? If you haven't it might be worth downloading them and then plugging the USB disk in and then pointing the Add New Hardware wizard to the unpacked drivers and see if it picks up anything USB related.

Like I said that is a wild card. Windows should have USB drivers pre-packed so since you haven't admitted to fiddling with Windows I can't think of an obvious solution.

try right clicking on your usb hosts in device manager and doing a 'update driver', just incase your pc has a newer one that its not using
