Automated phone calls - Cold calling

i pick the phone up and then leave it on the side and go back to doing whatever i was.

Similar to what I do. I just say hold on a moment whilst I get something (e.g pen / paper, whatever) and leave the phone to one side until they hang up.

Costs them money, which is payment for my wasted time.

If they are UK callers, I just try my best to answer their call bluntly in a way they will not call back e.g:

Calls for windows and doors - I just say i've got them and dont need spares & hang up.

Local Newspaper rings asking if we want it for 2 weeks at discounted price - i just said I was blind and the guide dog can't read too well either, then hang up.

Just give as good as you get!

;)

Got to the point of completely ignoring the phone from 4pm onwards.

Another idea I've heard of, is having a block on all withheld numbers but costs a few quit,

no it doesnt, its free, you just ask BT/virgin/whoever to block withheld numbers for your line.
Some people genuinly use withheld numbers etc though so..

Those are annoying, our answering machine just takes them. A machine talking to another machine :D

Even more annoying are these calls I get to my mobile from Swinton. I was getting 2 or 3 a day. If you pick it up you just get silence for 30 seconds and then it hangs up....it's some automated dialler for reps that lets them know when the phone is answered so they can bug you.

There's a better long-term fix for this sort of thing, though it takes a little bit of your time. Write a letter to Swinton informing them that as a result of their policy of deliberately annoying you, you have put them on your list of companies that you will not buy anything from. If you are paying for any service from them (insurance, in this case), cancel it and include the details in that letter ("If you check your records, you will see that I cancelled my policy on <date>", that sort of thing).

They'll have to get the message eventually.

Don't want these calls? Pay £2.50 a month for Anonymous Caller Reject :)

I don't get ANY sales calls.

what if you have friends who are ex-directory and have their number withheld? I'm registered with TPS - I don't get any sales calls either

A few times in the last year or so I've picked up the phone hand heard a badly recorded "hoooooonk.... This is you captain speaking.." I don't know what the rest says because the phone's always been put down, but I assume I've won several cruises.
