Automated video converter?

Hi I am off working away for 6 months soon and want to take my movie collection with me but its over 3TB so looking to convert the mkv files into say avi to stick on a 2TB drive as will only be watched via a tablet.

What would be the best software for this?

handbrake. you can load it up with massive batch of mkv files. it converts to mp4 which is supported on just about everything.
