Hi,

I've got automatic updates turned on (XP Pro) . Every so often a speech balloon appears telling me updates are ready for my PC.

I download and install them. All good.

However, over the last week my PC keeps telling me updates are ready. They get downloaded, the PC whizzes and clunks a bit, then I get told that the downloads can't be installed.

There are about a dozen of them. Mainly Office stuff like SP2 and SP3, plus the junk email filter for Outlook and a other security bits for Excel, Word, Power Point etc.

Anyone else had the same problem?

More importantly, how do I fix it?

Thanks in advance...

Assuming you have a genuine copy of Office, there will most likely be a hot fix from Microsoft because it is a known problem. However, unlike most MS problems, you will need to contact MS directly to obtain the hotfix.

I wish you luck.

1) First, I created a folder in my C:\ drive called 'WUAGENT'. Its address was:

C:\WUAGENT

I used this directory to store the Windows Update Agent file (see next step).

2) I went to the link below, and downloaded 'WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe' to my C:\WUAGENT directory:

http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

3) I opened the Command Prompt and forced a re-install of the Windows Update Agent with the following command:

C:\WUAGENT\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce

4) The re-install worked fine, and after that Windows Update worked perfectly.

Yep, it's all genuine (the bloke at the boot fair said so!!)

Only kidding, all legit copies etc.

Thanks anyway,
