Is it just me or is there something saddening about a nice car going past and hearing... mmmMmmmmmMmmmmmm of a auto rather than a nice manual gear change?

Probably just me.

True, I'm not sure what we'd all do without the majesty of the KKKKKKRRRRCCCCHHHHHH.....RRRRRRRR....KRRRRRCCHHHHHHHH....... that can be heard around all British supermarket car parks with manual car drivers.

Yep, just you.

I also have no time for manual snobs who claim that driving an automatic is “not proper driving. Might as well be driving a bumper car”.

You must not drive in traffic much.

I prefer driving a manual. And I used to spend most of my time in traffic.
I could only have one car, and an automatic would have undoubtedly been better for 95% of my driving, but I never found driving a manual in traffic arduous or inconvenient enough that I wanted to sacrifice the enjoyment the other 5% when I was driving for pleasure.

No elitism, or snobbishness implied. Everyone's situation is different and not everything is black and white when it comes to choosing transmissions. And that's just fine :)

The funny thing is all real racing cars are semi auto flappy paddle. I have manual as my commute is 5 minutes however if I was driving far everyday and in traffic I would make sure it was an automatic.

I have to agree with OP. I was watching one of those guys on youtube that films people leaving car shows and the older nice stuff definitely sounded cooler, even when compared to nice sounding cars of today like RS4s etc. It's all personal preference at the end of the day though.

Our current Alhambra is dsg (with flappy pedals!) and I doubt I will ever go back to a manual car ever again. It makes real life day to day driving so much nicer.

Auto 1 Series here with the 8 speed box which comfortably does 70mph @ 1600k revs - nice and relaxed driving.

Had a GT86 auto before that (sacrilege in the '86 frat) but again that was decent to drive considering I mainly do motorway miles and mainly in semi auto with the flappy paddles being used as the box was a little to eager to change down gears unnecessarily when the car encountered the slightest of inclines.

Personally, wouldn't go back to manual for a daily.

Just you :p

I couldn't go back to a manual now. Even with flappy paddles and hooning the car, I'd rather let the auto gearbox do its job other than a rare occasion I like to pretend I'm a pro driver :p.

Doesn't bother me unless it is also accompanied by one of these fart sounds the Germans seem to have to include on their sporty models.

had a bad knee injury to left leg playing football. now have a loose patella and some stretched ligaments. torn ankle ligaments soon thereafter on the opposite side.

so in a manual with the pressing of the clutch i was getting really bad knee pains after repetitive gear changes. so switched to automatics in both our cars and my knee is now 100% happy about it.

when it comes to having fun. i can slam both cars into sport mode and all of a sudden it's like the hounds of satan themselves have been unleashed and i don't need to focus on anything apart from acceleration, steering and braking. if anything it makes having fun more fun as you have less to think about or do. it holds the gear longer in sport mode and higher rev's, etc.

so i don't see what point elitist manual drivers think they are making by refusing to convert.

Just you... because whatever vehicle works best for you, there are plenty of people on here who'll rip you to pieces for it, especially the vegans with their electric vehicles!!

**** 'em.... drive whatever you like.
I've had the 'pleasure' of being bored to tears with three autos, but still prefer a manual... just like I still prefer surfing on a PC, despite the assertion that I don't even need one any more because 'Smartphone'... Just like I still prefer cooking and eating real food, even though I don't need to, because 'Huel'.

huel tatses disgusting so isn't comparable.

neither is a smartphone to a pc because a 5 inch screen is only going to make eye strain and migraines, etc more prolific compared to a 27" monitor. also try typing at 100 words per minute on a smartphone, etc. so again not a real comparison.

auto's do everything a manual does but better. i didn't realise this but holding a gearstick is bad for your gears in a manual. i did this so i was always ready to switch gear when hooning it around. plus what's the chances you can change gear 100% the most efficient way 100% of the time? people make mistakes. terrible drivers just do them more often but even the best driver will occasionally make a mistake. whereas an auto will never make a mistake unless it's faulty.

Yes. shoving a foot down to hold one lever whilst shoving another lever with your hand is very 21st century, all you need is a handbrake on the outside of the car to get the complete 1905 set :p
