Autopatcher, no more?

I bet they pull the plug on downloads via http too. Only the windows update from now on I bet!

Damn although i have legit windows was a very handy thing to have when you first install windows saves a lot of downloads seems all good things come to an end these days :(

Some companies really are killjoys arn't they?

AutoPatcher, for me, was a fantastic FREE soloution that made resinstalling Windows and it's patches so much easier and hassle free.

Sad day

Today we received an e-mail from Microsoft, requesting the immediate take-down of the download page, which of course means that AutoPatcher is probably history. As much as we disagree, we can do very little, and although the download page is merely a collection of mirrors, we took the download page down.

We would like to thank you for your support. For the past 4 years, it has been a blast. Unfortunately, it seems like it's the end of AutoPatcher as we know it.

Comments are welcome...

I had a call from Microsoft Legal this morning and they have told me that we are no longer allowed to endorse AutoPatcher on Neowin.

Microsoft will only allow updates to be downloaded from its own servers.

AutoPatcher started in 2003 and has been redistributed in some of the worlds best computer magazine cover CD/DVD's. I have no explanation for why Microsoft allowed it to continue unchecked for 4 years before making this decision.

I asked the representative if Windows Genuine Advantage had anything to do with it and he categorically told me this was not the case, he added that Windows Update for pre-Vista versions of Windows can now be accessed using Firefox and that the concern at Microsoft had more to do with the possible malicious code that could be redistributed with certified Microsoft updates.

We have no grounds to challenge the decision by Microsoft.

I'd like to thank the whole AutoPatcher team for their continued work, unfortunately none of the team is online, but they have been contacted via the AutoPatcher.com website by Microsoft Legal.

The AutoPatcher forums have been disabled for guests and members.

AutoPatcher was a simply superb project. I can't believe Microsoft took 4 years before deciding to take legal action, but it is really really low of them to put an end to what was such hard work by the AP team.

I have a horrible feeling that RyanVM's project is their next target... :(

1 thing for sure, this is gonna make Network Administration (my job) a whole lot harder and more tedious! Thanks Microsoft!

I never used Autopatcher properly as I always favoured using RyanVM's pack in nLite. You're probably right that MS will zero in on that next. However we've not had a RyanVM pack since June so soon we'll have had no July/August releases. I think RyanVM is working on a Masters and getting a job meaning that the RyanVM project could be coming to a natural end of its own doing. It is a pity this and I'm sure others will try to step into the breach.

Course I'd love to learn how the RyanVM pack is made, purely for the fun of learning stuff but also to help me out with XP installs in the future. And I'm looking to work in networking in the future so this kind of skill/knowledge could help me out I think.

I've found "AutoPatcher WinXP Aug07 x86 ENU Core exe" on a couple of torrent sites, at least we can still use that to cut out a couple of hours of patching. :(

I am surprised that Microsoft haven't jumped on ryanVM.net and n-lite / v-lite, as they too are just as useful as Autopatcher was.

It could be because Autopatcher patches Windows "live" or "actively" in Windows. nLite/vLite/RyanVM are used to "passively" update Windows in that you apply the updates to an install of Windows that you then make use of.

Does that make sense? Autopatcher rivals WindowsUpdate whereas MS can't write their updates to your PC and then reinstall Windows with those new updates added in.

Granted they'll be after nLite/vLite/RyanVM soon enough though.

Sorry if i have missed it - but it mentions nothing about service pack 2?

Should I assume I have to install SP2 before this - as most of these types of programs are Post SP2?

I might be being an idiot here but my natural assumption with this is that "why would you need Autopatcher unless you had a dodgy copy of XP/Vista" ? Am I right or wrong here? Is it that cumbersome to use the official Windows Update?

When I created an nLite install I just downloaded the relevant updates from Microsoft as well (via Genuine Advantage), so again I wasn't impeded by the lack of Autopatcher....

I do agree with you Durzel. I can't really see the advantage of Autopatcher over Windows Update.

For your nLite did you just download all the updates and point nLite at the exe's?

iirc SP2 became a prereq for autopatcher a little while back, before that the prereq was SP1.

How are you guys downloading the updates from windows update though? are you downloading them one by one and then slipstreaming those into an install disc?

My build method was to have an XPSP2 disc then have autopatcher and all my other driver bits, firewall, a/v etc on another.

Install from the SP2 disk, then autopatcher, drivers etc and then my protection s/w firewall, a/v etc. that way I was fairly well protected and patched up before ever connecting it to my network/internet.

The best thing about autopatcher was, one download, one install, one reboot. If you built an XP machine purely to SP2 and then connected to the net to do a windows update it'd take most of a day and several reboots before you where up to spec.
