Autotune

I don't mind the odd bit but it overused. The main problem for me is that with pop you don't have to have any musical talent with producers, all they have to do is look good and have a decent voice, now they don't even need a decent voice.

So pop is now degraded even further to a kiddys fashion show.

Just thinking about the amount of autotune in today's popular music leads me down a trail of thought which ultimately produces, with a frightening lack of resistence, a staggeringly clear depiction of myself raising a shiny black handgun up to my right hand side temple...

Audio quality is dire but you can't say these guys are having their vocals disguised as much as possible. They have talent :p

A metal bands track with no correction, and the vocalist can't hit a note in key to the song if it killed him.

Hey presto, the song sounds listenable and for the most part, the pitch correction is hard to notice.

Pay close attention to both versions of the chorus. The vocal line in particular "true intentions are not, predisposed to our fear ". Awful sounding in the EP version, with the pitch being corrected in the album version.

The whole of this particular album uses 'pitch correction'. Antares Autotune is one of MANY breeds of pitch correction software/hardware. The guys talking about "Alvin and the Chipmunks" is not pitch correction (autotune) it's pitch shifting/stretching.

Apologies that it's metal, but it's the only comparison that I can think of at the moment, that's available to the public.

Having had the misfortune of hearing Ke$ha 'sing' live and unaided by computer how anyone can listen to one of her singles is beyond me, she simply cannot sing it's not even a case of smoothing out a bad voice!

Clip is from a doumentry called “Before the Music Dies", if you haven't seen it already it's definately worth a watch.

Pretty much any effect can sound good in moderation but tacky when overused, be it compression, autotune, even too much reverb can kill dynamics.

Anyway, for those who are really fed up with the autotune effect, Moog have now come up with an amazing product called Auto De-tune. ;)

Autotune does work well, almost too well really... It has been around since the 90's I think but has improved with more recent versions. I guess it can be considered the musical equivelent of Photoshop, so a popstar will have photo's of them touched up and also their voice autotuned, when you see them live you may be in for a suprise! ;)

If you're into music at all then it's is worth watching the whole of that documentary if you can, things have changed a lot over the years... It's pretty critical of the current state of the music industry right now, it does feature some well known artists also, eg Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews...

EDIT: I didn't know that they were using on X-factor, I don't watch it but it goes to show how staged it is along with it's editing tricks...

But what you linked to showed conclusively that a listener wouldn't know.
There is no warble, no robot and it sounds like someone has just sung into a mic.
What you've got now is people using Autotune as an Emperors New Clothes saying when people are just singing crap.
Simon Cowell said that Autotune isn't used to alter peoples voices or whatever on X_Factor but other posters pointed to examples like the black girl singing Walking On Sunshine and a couple singing Don't Stop Believin (she was Autotuned and he was not).
Personally I couldn't hear anything untowards going on no matter how many times I listened and I'm not convinced with people shouting 'Autotune'.
Of course I can hear Cher and Kanye West Autotunes but they are meant.

So your linked video proved that we as a listener wouldn't know and if there were warbles it was the actual singer.
I'll have to submit some of my rehearsal videos where I'm using no monitors and I sometimes go off for the odd word and see if people shout 'Autotune'.
