Evening,

I've had a Panasonic AE1000 projector for a while now and it's been working great hooked up to my computer.

I'm just about to move house and I'd like to move it out of the computer room and into the living room. To be used for movies and stuff instead of my 42" plasma.

So I'll have those 2 as outputs and I'd like to be able to connect sky, xbox360 and a computer as inputs.

Some of the receivers I've seen have enough connections to do this but I'm a bit confused... If I connect an input using component can I output it to hdmi? a lot of the Yamaha kit has say 2 hdmi inputs and 1 hdmi output and 2 compnent inputs and 1 component output. So can you use these in whatever combination you like?

Also, the projector will obviously be on the oposite side of the room to the receiver. What's the best cable to use to connect them? The room's 5.4m wide but I thought using component or hdmi cables longer then 5m was a no no?

As long as you have an Amp which allows for it, you can have everything goings into the Amp, and it will all come out over a single HDMI.

I am not the most knowledgeable in this area though so perhaps someone else can correct me if I am wrong.

EDIT: I think it is called Upscaling of HDMI sources. Might be wrong though.

There's plenty of amps around that will do this (my Pioneer will) so you just need to check the spec to be sure. It'll be doing analogue to digital conversion for component to HDMI

I think they'll only output to one source at a time and will do so in an order like HDMI first, then component, then S-video and finally composite.

Which amp are you looking at?

I use HDMI to go from the amp to the PJ at the back of the room and it works perfectly at 7.5m. It's quite a heavy gauge cable though as you need to get a good quality cable for long lengths to keep the bandwidth high.

To be honest I'd like amp recommendations as well. I don't really want to spend more than 500 quid on the amp.

I'm finding it hard to find an amp with 2 hdmi outputs. Loads have 1 hdmi and 1 component which is why I though I might be able to plug the projector in with HDMI and the plasma in with component.

I take it no matter which way I have the video plugged in I can still have all the audio output to one set of speakers?

All of the inputs have an hdmi input but I can change them to component if needed.

Do you mind me asking how much you paid for the 7.5m HDMI cable? Prices seem to vary so much I want to make sure I'm not being done.

Onkyo 606?

Video transcoding and upconversion to HDMI with 4 x HDMI 1.3a inputs

That looks great! Will it output to both my tv via component and projector via HDMI if all the inputs are via HDMI? Sorry I'm pretty new to this so don't really understand it fully.

606 is a popular model. I don't think it will output a HDMI signal in component but it definitely will the other way around. Your best bet is to check with a dealer.

I would think you'd be better off a separate HDMI switch for your two displays.

The cable was £60 and made by keene electronics. There are cheaper ones (and considerably more expensive ones too!) out there but I tried one and it wouldn't do 1080p properly so it went back and I bought a Keene Electronics one that is guaranteed to do 2160p so is future proof and the build quality was miles better. If I'd had more time I would have tried some other cheap one probably.

I think you are looking at spending a minimum of £1000 for an amp with 2 HDMI outputs. A '1 input 2 ouput HDMI splitter' when used in conjunction with the 606 should do the trick though.
