AV Receiver went bang...

Hello,

I'm gutted, my Denon AVR 2113 which I've had for a good few years just went 'bang'. It smells like something has overheated and 'popped', no smoke / fire though so I guess potentially it could have been worse... Assuming the receiver is bust (as it's well past it's warranty), I'm now in the market for a replacement. I've not looked into them for a fair while so would love some advice if possible.

I'm currently running: Q Acoustics 2000CI for centre, Q Acoustics 2010I for front left/right and Yamaha YST-FSW100 for sub.

What would you guys recommend as replacement? I haven't really set a budget, it doesn't need to be 'all singing, all dancing', just something reliable. I can appreciate decent sound, but certainly not an audiophile.

Thank you in advance,
Scott.

if you don't want to spend that much then Denon AVRX520BT is great value for money, as very good sound quality, but it's a downgrade from yours

or

Denon AVRX2300W

Thank you for the reply. :)

I did spot that AVRX520BT on Richer Sounds for £220. Looks decent, do you reckon the sound quality will be noticeably different to my 2113?

well i have one and i find the sound quality really good, but it won't be as powerful as yours because your is 7.1

can you not get to a Richer Sounds store? then you could hear the Denon AVRX520BT and others..

but at a guess i don't think you'll notice any different in sound quality if you did go for a Denon AVRX520BT if you wanted to save money

I think the 2113's up to date equivalent would be the X2300. It really depends on how keen your ears are and your listening habits as to whether you notice the difference. Perhaps try to find a second hand X2000 or a shop with the "old" X2200 if you're wanting to save some cash?

That's great, cheers for the suggestions guys. I'll have a listen to a few in Richer Sounds next weekend. :)

Guys do you reckon it might be worth getting Richer Sounds to have a look at repairing the unit?

I've had a look on their website and it's £65 for them to inspect the AVR - potentially it could 'just' be the PSU, or maybe one of the capacitors. Not sure what the total bill could go up to, but just a thought...

If it was me - no. This is why.

I had a Pioneer Pro-logic receiver in the Early 90's. After a year it went pop - £100 repair later it was fine. I kept it for another 3 years with no issues.

2 upgrades later, I bought a Sony STR-DB 930 Receiver. It went bang on 2 occasions before selling it & the buyer said it went bang too. 1st repair was under warranty & I paid for the extra guarantee so that wasn't really an issue.

Thing is, I don't want a piece of hardware I paid good money for to spend more time in the repair shop than it does at home. I got fed up with it so a quick trip to RS to buy a replacement. They were selling that model & its successor for a few quid more. I bought the successor even though there was almost no difference, because of the reliability of above model.

No issues with that at all in the 4 years I owned its successor, to my Knowledge its still going strong after 16 years due to the fact I sold it to a mate of my Dad's.

To sum up, I think you would be throwing money at a 3 year old receiver which doesn't have a good residual value, repaired or otherwise.

Better off putting it on the auction site saying faulty spares or repair & putting that money towards a new one. Buy one from RS with a warranty, its costs 10% of the purchase price, money back up to one month after expiry of said warranty if unused (you get a refund in store) Loan machine, maintenance checks all part of the price.

One of the reasons why RS has won Best Retailer from Which in previous years & is recommended by them today.

As for my recommendation, get another Denon. I'm on my 2nd one after getting rid of the 1st one after 8 years (I needed more HDMI outputs & networking)

Cheers Grimley, completely agree. I'm going down RS on Saturday, depending on sound difference I'll end up with either the £220 or £500 Denon AVR. :)

I'd go for a A series Yamaha AVR.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner.

IMO, Yamaha gives you much better sound per pound/dollar spent than Denon. Denon has a very "Denon" sound while Yamaha is a very natural sound.

I actually had a fairly expensive Marantz (better than Denon) receiver and my friend had the same speakers and a cheaper Yamaha unit and his setup sounded better, hands down, 100%.

Yamaha is the best choice in my opinion for "affordable" range home theater or home stereo use. You really can't go wrong with them.

I hope you have HIFI shop nearby where you can listen to the Denon and Yamaha units in the same price range side by side and see for yourself (Hear for yourself I mean). I'd be surprised if you didnt agree with me and hornetstinger that it is the better choice.

Thanks for the information mate, brand-wise I'm open to anything. I'm going down Richer Sounds on Saturday, hoping to listen to a few different units. The A series Yamaha hornetstinger linked to me is a tad out of my price range unfortunately. My missus set the budget to £300, naturally I stretched it to £350. ;)

My shortlist is below:

I'd be looking for at least DTS:X and Dolby atmos support on a new amp if I was going to get one these days bud - doesn't look like any of the cheaper models you've linked above have them standards other than the £500 denon.

Peter Tyson have the AVRX2300 for same price with buy now pay later and also trade in. Might be worth looking. I'll be buying mine this afternoon as I can't see any bargain deals coming up for one.

trade-in isn't for that model! - thanks for the shout though - this might be the ideal time to upgrade my RX-V671 ;)
