I'm after a new AV receiver for 2 reasons.

1) My current sony is about 10 years old has no HDMI connections and just optical.

2) Some how my 10 month old has managed to kill the IR receiver on the AV box. remote works for everything now but the amp.

I've been looking and have these 2 short listed

SONYSTRDH520

PIONEERVSX322

SONY STRDH820 is 7.1 & has two Optical Inputs whereas SONYSTRDH520 is 5.1 & only one Optical Input

I only have

Xbox
SKy
Blu-Ray
HTPC connected to my current AV and all these will go through HDMI with the new one.

Will find teh model of my current one to see if it will be an improvement or not.

Sky will need the optical connection, it only sends 2.0 through HDMI (unless they have changed this on the latest boxes, and you have one of those).

ok so i need 1 optical then.

I've got the back sky box will have a check to see how surround sound goes from them.

according to sky the newer boxes do 5.1 over HDMI

heck the audio output

Dolby outputTo hear Dolby Digital sound your SkyHD box must be set to output Dolby Digital sound. You can change this setting quickly and easily with your Sky remote.

Press services on your Sky remote control and you will see the main menu with Options highlighted.
Using the left/right arrows, highlight Settings and press select.
Using the left/right arrows, highlight Sound and press select.
If you're using an Optical (TOSLINK) cable, press the down arrow to highlight Digital Audio Output - Optical. Output should be set to DOLBY D.

If you're using HDMI, press the down arrow to highlight Digital Audio Output – HDMI. Output should be set to DOLBY D.

Press the green button to save your settings.
Press sky to return to normal viewing.

That's an old link for the DRX595.

Only the DRX595 none PVR receiver will do DD via HDMI, none of the PVR boxes will do it.

This box.

It even states in the description..allowing access to 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound via HDMI, a first for Sky.

Out of the two I'd go for the Sony.

I'm currently looking for a receiver and pretty much set on the Onkyo TX-NR515 - good value for money if you can stretch your budget a bit

just been going through my current amps settings

ATM its only plugged in through optical to everything as thats all it has.

my LG bluray has the following setting which should I be using to get the best sound.
