What are the general thoughts here about installing anti virus and security software on Android phones and tablets?

Most concerned about phone given potential for data and call usage etc.

All thoughts and/or recommendations please!

Andrew

Well I have installed AVAST Antivirus software on mine.
Not the best, but a system I know.
Sadly it seem's Android is apparently very easily hacked so software is advised.

Not at all! If you're sensible with what you install (only install from APKs if you know where they're from and trust the source) then you have nothing to worry about. I've yet to see a single compelling argument as to why any form of AV is necessary on android.

Pretty much this.

If you act like a pleb and start sideloading BigTitties.apk then you deserve to get infected.

:p

As said above, unless you plan on installing porn apps from Japan etc. or installing from a 3rd party source which looks dodgy, android is just fine security wise.

Absolutely no need for it.

If you actually bother to read what permissions an app is requesting, and do some thought as to why they may need them, then AV software is pointless.

If however you just install any old crap, including side-loading apk's found on random sites on the internets, then yeah maybe it's a good idea...

I go for option 1 personally :p

This.

AV on a phone? You must be crazy!

Don't install malware.

Do viruses out in the wild actually exist on Android? You know, self propagating stuff you don't actually have to install.

Can android security suites actually detect those rather than just vetting apps?
