Average Salary/Good Salary

All major cities in the UK have international airports so I don't really get that point. And it's the same with motorway arguement, in fact it's probably easier to be based in Birmingham or Manchester on that front as your more central and have less congestion (and the associated fees) to deal with?

OK, maybe I should have said major international airports. A lot of international airports in smaller cities either don't fly to certain places, or are overpriced. We live very close to an international airport but the two holidays we had this year (New York and Stockholm) we flew from London airports.

I didn't say anything about motorways, since I know in the midlands there are very good roads linking Loughborough/Coventry/Nottingham/Leicester etc, I'm talking about trains primarily.

Obviously my perspective may be different from other people as I can't drive. A guy I work with can't drive either, but he says that's because when he lived in London you didn't need a car, you could just get the bus/tube everywhere. So he never bothered learning.

Well I earn 17.5K, am only 20 and this allows me to afford half the rent on a small 2 bed in Milton Keynes, pay to run my car, spend too much on food and still have a little left over. Im in no idea that this is a good salary, but overall for my age, its at least average, I have friends on much less.

To continue discussing rent prices, there is no medium at the moment. They are all over the place. £150w for a bedsit in Hackney, with shared toilet/bath etc. Before bills and tax. Hmm..

Box rooms going for £500+ a month.

Studio flats, £1200 for a 1 bed, £2000+ for a two bed..

All thanks to lack of mortgages and the ridiculous number of buy-to-let in London.

I earn almost £26k from my full time job. I also have money come in from other avenues. I would say thats average/slightly above

Yeah, £600 a month if you want to live on your own in a crap flat, I can't fathom why anyone would though. Living on your own in london would be pointless, you're rarely at home enough to appreciate the fact it's all yours and you're getting completely stung for bills/council tax

Err... so in other words you're now saying the person you were saying was talking rubbish, wasn't talking rubbish. As for living by yourslf... I would never want to share an apartment ever again, I like my privacy and I like being able to do my own thing, so for me and many others it's a priority.

For me London is often like a designer shop, it's nice to have a look in the window now and then, but if you go inside your surrounded by pretenious people and before you know it you're broke.

lol, just lol.

My wife is originally from London area (well, Essex...) and her family have always worked in the city. It's fun to go and visit, I like spending the odd week up there when I'm on training courses but not sure I could live there.

Her dad always says we'd be mental to move up there from down here, although I think we're lucky in that we've both managed to land ok jobs for this area.

Although saying that when the market picks up again I might go contracting again and the lure of London rates might be calling.

As for salary, as long as the bills are paid and I have a little left over I'm happy. We don't spend much after bills, like a holiday now and again but that's about it really.
