Just heard from the gf that average speed cameras pick one car out of every few to measure their speed.

Might get lucky now and again but remember, you might be the one picked for speed measurement!

:)

From what I've heard don't think that is true - though for various reasons it won't pickup every single vehicle.

Ok cool, I'll just drive everywhere at 100mph now safely knowing that I may or may not get a ticket. Send my thanks to your GF OP.

Sigh.. I'll explain the joke:

Gf doesn't understand the concept of an average speed camera system. Rather than the system taking several photos over a known distance to calculate the average speed she thinks they're normal speed cameras but set only to check an average from the cars passing them.

In a way this is probably true. Most likely they won't be able to pick out individual cars when theres a bunch clustered closely together. Where the ones behind have their plates obscured by the one in front :p

So can someone explain to me the following:

If I drive over the speed limit through 10 average speed cameras, do I get 10 speeding tickets or one?

Would they calculate my average speed between each camera or between the first and last?

One ticket for speeding iirc.

I think you need to pass through 3 cameras for them to get an average in the UK.

In other countries it works different. In France they do it at the entrance and exit, which is why you see everyone absolutely gunning it and then going in to the service station near the end of the motorway for a break before passing the exit camera :D

The cameras are certainly capable of picking out many reg numbers at the same time, usually each lane has a camera so i doubt they miss any unless its hidden, like someone driving too close to a truck.

I always wondered about the people that brake for average speed cameras then speed up again. Perhaps this is what they all think too!
