Average speed cameras - an insight

I always wondered about the people that brake for average speed cameras then speed up again. Perhaps this is what they all think too!

as far as avg speed cameras there are 3 kinds of people -;

do strict 70mph and no more
slow down for each camera
do 90+ all the time as if there's no camera at

I find it really odd, I know often times they're not on but is it worth the risk? especially when temp limit is enforced.

Yeah it baffles me, I go through a few sets of 50mph ones on the motorway fairly regularly and I will race up to them at 85/90 and them slam the cruise on the 50mph for the duration then the moment I'm past the last yellow lamppost I mash the accelerator and off I go again.

The number of times I end up at 50 with someone right up my backside flashing/looking annoyed or flying past at 70 or something who I then leave standing as soon as we're out of the average check zone...

Do they know something I don't? Do they normally have a huge margin of error? Or am I surrounded by morons who are getting tickets because they can't follow a simple instruction irritating as it might be on the one part of the motorway you know for an absolute fact has cameras on it?!

I kind of get it if you just drive like that anyway but it's the respectable looking people in bog standard Hyundais seemingly desperate to speed specifically right there that baffles me.

I have it under good authority that if the average speed cameras are working they will catch every god damn car that speeds through them, so there :p

.
Considering the amount of people who fly past me on the 50mph section of the A55 while I have cruise set at 55 indicated, I think this. Especially as there are camera men there most days.

I do this, not to avoid speeding fines but to obtain maximum MPGz. I once coasted for 6 miles on the M6 and the Polish driver never even knew I was there!
I had a guy in a transit doing this behind my artic a while back, unbeknown to him I was empty and when I had to perform a sudden harsh brake due to an incident in front of me, I stopped much quicker than he was expecting and he ended up rammed into the rear of my trailer.

I'm sure his loss of NCD more than cancelled out any saving on fuel! :p

I see this frequently, why a car driver would want to blind themselves to what's in front by being too close to an HGV is beyond me!

Not to mention the absolute battering your front end will take from all those stones being kicked up. I cringe thinking of it.

My unimaginary GF who does exist has such a funny view of how technical things work it's a source of constant amusement :)

We were talking about average speed cameras because of the new ones on the M32 in Bristol. They've caught over 6000 drivers in 2 weeks! The person above who said they'll catch everyone speeding is bang on (even though this contradicts the gf's words of wisdom), I've been reading about them and the technology is now very advanced. They're getting to the level where they'll soon be fining drivers for going just 2mph over, it's that accurate.

Now I set cruise to exactly what the limit is, beware people who set it 5mph over because they'll soon be dishing out fines!

I think you need to pass through 3 cameras for them to get an average in the UK.

Two cameras, on the M3 you can come on at j3 and leave at j2 because they closed the damn motorway for some stupid reason, and there are only two cameras in between and you can get a ticket.

Do you think that this is a safe way to drive?

So when I go through the 30mph average speed road on my daily with a cluster of overhead cameras to cover each lane on both ends it's no big deal cos there isn't 3 of them?

Dunno where this logic comes from but knowing position A and position B and the distance between them sounds a solid way to call someones average speed between the points.

*however some scum will deliberately speed down this road as there's a turning halfway down so they never go past the second camera.

Certainly on motorways where there are cameras on several gantries along a stretch of road, they can link any two to make a section, and the average between those two will be the detection zone.

For example a ten mile stretch with gantries every mile and cameras on every gantry.

They could link cameras at mile one and mile ten, to measure average over whole ten miles.

They could link cameras at mile one and mile 2, then link mile 3 and mile 4, and so on to make 5 separate sections where each could send you separate ticket.

Or any combination of the ones between.

It is a lottery how they have it set up so best to just always obey the limit.

In other countries it works different. In France they do it at the entrance and exit, which is why you see everyone absolutely gunning it and then going in to the service station near the end of the motorway for a break before passing the exit camera :D

I think that is an urban myth in France. The speed cameras are actually just before the toll booths when the speed drops.... hence the reason the French don't apply the anchors just before the booth like they do on the M6 toll. If you want a ticket in France, wait until it rains on one of the major routes. With the reduced speed limit, it seems to attract every spare police car sat on every junction with a camera.

At least if you do speed on French tolls roads you do sometimes get a friendly warning on the matrix signs.
