Was on an M6 jaunt yesterday, and noticed average speed cameras on the motorway roadworks - although what surprised me was the amount of people driving through them above 40... especially at night.

Do they know something I dont about these cameras?

Out of interest; if they don't flash and front numberplates aren't lit up at night, how do they recognise them? Do they have some sort of nightvision mode?

Read your plate, log it in a database, probably check for tax, re read it on the other cam work out time taken and book you if they need to.

Prolly works using IR.

Have you checked you speedo against a sat nav?

Your car maybe reading less than your actual speed by a few Mph

MB

got these on the M1 and yeah I just think people are dumb as! Funny thing is that they have signs which advise you its average speed check. They read the number plate which then works out your speed between two waypoints (upto a mile) if you average is above 40mph (not sure tolerance above this) it then despatches an automactic ticket.

I've entered bthem doing over 40 and then just slowed to 40 with out an problems and people were, as you said over taking still.

I entered a set at 80 and proceeded to do roughly 10-15mph over the limit through them

That was a year ago so I think I'm safe.

Yeah this was a while ago and I entered at just a bit over 40 to ;) but I'm fine.

Did contemplate slowing down to under 40 to average it out but thought I'd take my chances.

Yer, the thing with these cameras is that no one knows what the tolerances are.

Lets say for example you are doing spot on the speed limit as indicated speed, you could obviously afford to go a few miles an hour faster to go exactly at the speed limit, using sat nav or whatever.

But no one knows if there is any more play in them or not, its probable that there is still a few miles an hour of give in them though.

I just go though at the indicated speed limit and watch the world overtake me wondering when their post man comes next.

yep, its really funny between J12 and J11 on the M6, average speed camera's. Yet everyone flies through at 50mph and then brake when they see the cameras. 99% dont relise they are average speed ones :o

Through the roadworks on the M25 they've got two sets up... I always sit at 40 all the way through, and everybody else seems to too, which means you've basically got a rolling road block, as both lanes are travelling at the same speed.

I read somewhere that they turn them off at night and when the workers aren't around. No idea how true that is, though.. and I certainly wouldn't like to chance it :p

Remember going down to stoke at 2am one night about a year ago and going through these at 80mph or so. Whilst half way through I remembered :p Clue me doing 20mph in the inside lane :p

P.S - These were on Therwall when it was being repaired, obviously not at J12.

I was going about 38-39 on the SatNav and they were overtaking between 5-10 faster...

It's probably just the tolerence levels then, I'd have thought being average speed the tolerences would have to be higher?

I dont think that there are any rules with regards to getting caught speeding, plus these are new technology so there may be new legislation for them...

I hate these camera's, they're just too big brother for my liking.

At least with the Gatso, you can just slow down for a bit and then be on your way. But with these things you can't escape!

I know some of you think that's great, but I'd prefer to be able to control my own speed and not be watched the whole way.

I just hope they are only used when completly necessary (Roadworks, Accidents, Bad weather etc) and not on the whole time as a fund raiser.

End of rant. :o
