Average Speed Check

Hi,

So I read some stuff in the paper the other day that they are thinking about doing away with speed bumps and installing average speed check cameras in certain 30 Mph Zones. Now average speed cameras really seem to work with 95% of people sticking to the limit, the other 5% are obviously too stupid to know what an average is!

Now I think this is an excellent idea as I never speed in a 30Mph zone and hate speed bumps. Just before you all start I do speed but just never in towns or through villages etc where 30Mph is indicated, give me a motorway or "National Speedlimit" sign and I'm off with a whoosh (Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo) or a roar (Z4 3.0 straight 6) :)

i know what you mean about some not knowing what average is,
i travel on the M6 a lot and the roadworks on there have the average speed check cams.
the amount of people that overtake me when were all ment to be doing 40, one even flashed me to get out the way

How do they work? They read the number plate as you go through cam 1 and read it again past 2?

Why don't we all bunch up so they cant read the registrations? :p

Or take the front 'plate off.

I'm always amused by the people who hare through the SPECS zones at 80, brake hard for the camera, then zoom off again.

I hate the sounds of this  There are millions and millions of 30's where much much faster speeds are perfectly safe. If they staretd putting these things in all over my area it'd be such a pain, it'd just be speedo watching non stop :(

i'd be all for that, if they are really interested in reducing speeds on roads, not just getting money from people the specs system seems to be the best bet, actually giving you a chance to react if you go over the limit and all.....

and don't get me started on speed bumps, evil evil things that are a totally stupid idea, why muck up a perfectly good road by putting lumps in it? and it doesn't effect the big lumbering 4x4s or the guys in large white vans who would really do the damage if they hit anyone over (or indeed under) the limit

What angle are the photos taken? As some cars have number plates which face down and are covered and inch or two by the front of the car, so depending on the angle the photo is taken they can't see it

Possible or talking out of my backside? :p

Another completely misplaced scheme..

If the general consensus is that 'speeding' accounts for a very small percentage of fatalities, why don't they spend the money trying to actually have an impact on the more major causes of fatalities???

I'll be cynical and say that it's all about revenue generation, no doubt the revenue from visible speed camera's is dropping and they need to bolster it back up!!!

To me, the major problem is that fining people after the fact is largely stupid, I'd rather they came up with a scheme that prevented them speeding in the first place!! When people get 3 or 6 points, they don't slow down, they just buy a GPS detector....

There's loads of these in Nottingham and on the roads they're on they work very well and everyone seems to drive at the speed limit. Unfortunately they seem to have increased the average speed on roads where they're not fitted, which are generally roads were people should be doing under 30.

My mate on his TL1000R was laughing quite hard to himself the other day coz of the average camera stuff. Takes pictures from the front.... oh look motor bike :p

I had a National Express coach blast me with his main beam on the inside lane of the variable speed limit section of the M42 when the signs were lit up displaying 60 and I was in front of him obeying them.

I inferred that he was an onanist.

It must be possible. I was in a car with a downward angled front number plate the other day, which is actually SORN'd, and we went through a SPECS area. I'd have thought the owner would be fined if it were picked up...

Well if the car was designed like that and is legally on sale in Britain then there is nothing they can do. Should give that idea to Aston or someone :p Tilt down number plates :p

If the car doesn't have a recess to fit a British Standard plate, you are allowed to use a stick on one. Which, with some careful positioning, ANPR/SPECS can't read ;).

Are these likely to only be placed where currently there are speed bumps? If so I wouldn't have an issue with these.

If this is the best they've got, then its a fool hardy approach IMO.

You can fool average speed cameras just by stopping at some shops to grab a pint of milk and a loaf of bread! I could have done 40mph through 'during' the stretch and stopped at the shops just before the last camera, and hey what do you know..........I wasnt speeding!

In France, people think that you get fined if you bang it down the toll roads as it checks your ticket time and calcualtes the speed.

In reality, this isnt true, (well, it never has been for me), and even if it was, I'd just stop in a service area near the end of the toll and have a wee! (which would actually negate speeding in the first place)

toll roads in france = not true to lemans this year there was numerous groups of english people on the A28 toll road cruising at a minimum of 170kmh+ police where at some of the toll booths but i did not see one person stopped all the way down.

one trick "somone" i know used to do on his motorbike a few years back when the camera's had front facing, film based gatso's was scream through about 30 times to waste the film.

and he never got caught or a warning, nothing.
