Average speed checks

I often wonder when going through average speed cameras, with cars flying past , well above the speed limit how many have dodgy number plates on them? Must be a few now just so you don't have to road tax etc.

I go to SE London often and always see flashes. I sit at 70 and I do drop down when the speed limits change. Most of the flashes are approaching junction 28 heading south.

The classic that makes me chuckle are the drivers that slow down at the cameras and then speed up again.:D

If they're flashing cameras then they're standard fixed Gatsos, so slowing down for them and then speeding back up does work. Average speed cameras don't flash.

There's loads up on the A1 Western Bypass up here, they've also knocked a section of it down to 30mph which makes things fun...

Only two cameras (so one trap) on each side works so you can ignore most of it :)

I've went down to Wales twice from Newcastle a few months ago and hit the ones on the A1. I should have gotten atleast 1 ticket as I didnt realise I was speeding. I read elsewhere that its only if youve done 10 miles over the speed limit they pick you up which seemes stupid but looks like the case.

Also they dont seem to be switched on when the workers arent there as people were doing 70 through a 50 set so I'm guessing some people had info that I didnt. This was on a Sunday evening by the way.

How do you know which bits you can ignore?

I have now changed my position on average speed cameras. They work. In fact, they worked twice in two different counties during the same journey on Sunday evening! Let my experience be a lesson to you all.

Never again.

I'm not sure about that. There's a 20 mile average camera stretch on the M1 from around Northampton way to just past the M6 junction. There are signs saying "speed enforcement operational 24 hours a day" so presumably this is a common misconception.

A lot of the time the reason for the 50 limits on motorways is because the lanes have had to be made a lot narrower than usual - not just for the safety of the workers so that's why it applies 24/7.

I have always wondered why people plough through them at 70+ though but it's a risk I'm not prepared to take. Even on that 20 mile stretch doing 50 vs 70 only adds about 6 minutes, hardly worth pushing it.

I did 55 through a 40 average speed section once. Made a mistake thinking it was 50. Didn't get done.

My Mum has cancer and has recently had an operation, so I've made the journey from Buckinghamshire to Northumberland every weekend for the last month. I always do exactly the same thing at the roadworks, set cruise to 60 and plod through. I've never had a ticket from any of the previous journeys, so I have no idea what was different this time.

Regardless, I'll set cruise lower in future.

Top tip for the next year or two to anyone travelling to Newcastle. (Don't is not allowed. :p)

Go on the A19. :)

I noticed they put some average speed cameras up in a VILLAGE on my way to work.

But as it's the countryside, I've also noticed people just removing their front plates because there are rarely any police around those parts :P

An average of 57MPH on the A1 in North Yorkshire and an average of 60MPH on the M1 in Northamptonshire.

If you have a clean license try your luck in sending them a letter explaining your situation.
My bro in law got done twice in a week just after the birth of his kid. I wrote an empathetic letter about losing sleep and providing for the new family.

They cancelled one of the tickets and did a speed awareness for the other :D

Seen loads get tickets off these in Northampton when they were first installed and my Impreza buyer got one on his way home from purchasing it, I know this because they sent me the NIP :D

The newest Tomtom Go satnavs or the TT Go Mobile Android app keep track of your average speed through such areas and display it on screen if you have speed cameras installed.

Thought it was kind of a cool feature - although it did cross my mind to speed up over the last mile to hit the 'target' when I was only averaging 46 in a 50.
