average speeds mtb v road bikes

lordrobs do you have slicks or semi slicks or whatever they're called on the hybrid?
They have quite a heavy tread but are effectively road biased. I have the 40mm version - http://www.sportsdirect.com/kenda-keen-cross-tyres-931793
You live in the flattest part of the UK - The largest hills in that area are the traffic calming speed bumps :p Add some proper hills in the mix and the difference between MTB and Road bikes is significant.

Agreed, I forgot my usual caveat of "add a headwind or incline and the difference increases"

I can average about 14mph on a 40k mainly flat towpath, that's probably 50% tarmac and the rest variable cobbles, dirt, bit stoney etc.

That's on a hard tail mtb with light cross country tyres.
