That sounds about right then.
he has a 1.4 acheiving 20mpg, you have roughly double engine size achieving roughly half the mpg :p :D
 
Wifey had this on her 1.6 auto (2000) golf.

Hers was pulling high teens MPG, stank of fuel, had mayo on oil filler cap.

Changed stat and o2 sensor and has been fine since.
 
Result! Not only was the thermostatic function not working, it wasn't even there! Are you sure your in the right place, thermostat housing is a black plastic section bolted onto the block.

Sounds like it has had overheating problems in the past. My sister bought a car that had no thermostat. When I put one in it suffered overheating problems and due to unexplained water lose I strongly suspected HGF. I got her to bung it through the auction that week.

Golf's are pretty heavy cars and being it is only a 1.4 75bhp it might have suffered overheating in the past. Has it a tow hook? I have also heard of people removing thermostat's when they are towing to reduce overheating on smaller engine's, especially up hill.
 
I Imagine the plastic / metal housing is there just no stat, I've never seen a set up where you wouldn't have been able to just remove the stat itself and bung the hose / housing back over

What? That makes no sense.

All the thermostat does is allow coolant to hit the radiator loop. Open = Radiator in use, Closed = just engine/pump/heater matrix.

If you remove it then the radiator loop is active all the time.
 
I'm not 100% but I'm fairly sure when I seen a mk5 gti's stat it was just held into the housing by a clip - you could easily remove it and put the housing on

Anyway, irrelevant to this, the op needs to add a stat back into the mix
 
The resistance of a 'stat increases the pressure of the coolant in the block and hence its boiling point. Without the stat under high loads you can risk cavatation at the water pump or bubbles generated on the water jacket cylinder walls which reduces heat transfer from the combustion chamber.
 
Removing it makes the car take ages to heat up. In this kind of weather doesn't exactly do much good to the engine. We use to remove them on Mini's and replace them with special sleeve.

You are right about they can cause over heats because the water will travel through the radiator too quickly to be cooled enough. I have however seen people want this as bodge fix when the cooling system isn't functioning correctly.

I would be anxious to find out why it has been removed as they cannot just fall out. It could be as simple as it was faulty in the past and instead or replacing it somebody just cowboy'd it and removed it.

I would worry what damage has been done in the meantime, especially if it is displaying problems such as high fuel usage. I am wondering if it is running to rich which will cause heat. That would cause it to use loads of fuel and possibly why somebody removed the thermostat if they thought it was getting too hot.
