Baku
When was the track built?
It wasn’t – Baku is the newest street circuit on the Formula 1 calendar, joining the ranks of Monaco, Melbourne and Singapore.

When was its first Grand Prix?
The first Grand Prix in Baku was held in 2016, as the European Grand Prix. That was followed by the inaugural Azerbaijan Grand Prix in 2017, which witnessed one of the biggest upsets of the season, with Daniel Ricciardo winning out from Valtteri Bottas and the Williams of Lance Stroll, while Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel engaged in some argy-bargy behind the Safety Car.

What’s the circuit like?
A mixture of wide and open and tight and twisty. The lonnnnng main straight along the Baku shoreline is a slipstreaming mecca, and with cars able to run three abreast into Turn 1, the action often looks more IndyCar than F1. However from there, the track loops around into the city’s narrow, winding Icheri Sheher old town, dramatically wending past Baku’s medieval city walls. As in Monaco, slightest mistakes are punished quickly and severely, while set-up wise, the teams are forced to choose between downforce for the twisty bits and less drag for the straight.

Very much looking forward to this one as well. Myself and my nephew went to Baku for the 2019 race, a beautiful city and very friendly people. It was also the cheapest GP on the calendar. Looking forward to going back there one day when all the current madness ends.

Baku's been a bit all or nothing in the past: either delivering very dull or very good races. Let's hope it's the latter this weekend.

It's going to be interesting to see whether Lewis/Mercedes can mount a comeback against Max/RB after their Monaco disaster.

Thanks @Shimmy for the thread :)

Also looking forward to this one, if Ferrari can maintain the pace they've found & where Mercedes might fare.

I'd really like to see Lando with another podium too.

I don't know who decided to get young kids to ask questions at the driver's press conferences, but it's truly joyous watching the drivers taking their bonkers questions seriously.

I hope its not a Red Bull which wins, the 2 race grace period for fixing the bendy wing is generous to say the least, if they are illegal, they should be removed asap (as per all other teams).

Nice to see Mazepin upholding the traditions. Norris had a nice spin too. Looks like the Ferraris have pace here as well, should be interesting for the weekend.

Latifi's engine has packed in. FP2: red flag while he's recovered.

Meanwhile Mazepin continues to make friends.

How the blazes is Bottas a whole second slower than Hamilton? And were Mercedes running much heavier fuel loads or are they really that much off the pace?

Gasly quietly up there again. Hopefully he, the Ferraris and McLaren disrupt the norm in qualifying tomorrow.

This is another track for young drivers to snatch a podium and win, hoping for a mixed result.

Also love the article online where Merc suggest Bottas was slightly misaligned in his pit box which didn't help his wheel nut issue. Seems like a petty statement to make.

They can't get the tires working on either car.

"Toto Wolff has declined to come out and speak to any media,” Sky F1’s Simon Lazenby reported from Baku. “We can understand that."

Mercs front wing flex's a lot, more than any other car.
