i was just minding my own bussiness when i got a azureus cyclic redundancy error on 2 of my torrents.
had to restart my pc - was behaving very slow and crashed - had to turn off.
jiggled the sata cables, turned on and ran a chkdsk on the D drive (the one with the torrents on).

it found loads and loads of errors but seemed to fix them all - got into windows and everything seems fine - azureus is fine now.

is there anything else to worry about??
could it have just been a loose connection?

cheers

It could simply be a loose connection or it might be that your drive is on the way out, maybe try running the manufacturers diagnostic software to see if it finds any errors (Maxtor use Maxblast for instance, I think the rest all have something different).

hmmm, well, after another chkdsk with a full surface scan i thought it was ok, but then another torrent gave a cyclic red error after about 10 mins.
I've deleted the data and started up the torrent again to see what happens.
On o&o defrag there are a few red sectors with what looks like bad sector data and so far everything else is working fine (played a game on the drive all last night and there where no problems - only azureus has given me a problem so far).

i'll download for a bit to see what happens and then test it with seagate tools to see if it finds anything.
Pretty annoying as the drive is only 8 months old - i hope its not on its way out but it certainly sounds like it.

well, had the drive working last night downloading - no errors.

did a seagate tools scan this morning/afternoon (only just stopped!) and it found a lot of bad sectors, maybe a couple of hundred, around 5 areas on the disk - it also failed the file system scan.

but in windows it seems fine at the moment - and i just restarted with a chkdsk and it found no errors - so i'm not sure if its knackered or not.

i'm going to buy a new hard drive or 2 next week and i'll copy everything across - but are these errors enough for me to say that the hard drive is broken? are these errors enough for me to send it back to seagate under warrenty and get an RMA??? i'm not sure.

its definitely dodgy - its working and i'm downloading to it (probably foolishly), but i just did a scan using discwizard (seagates software) just to make sure and it failed with a SMART alert - oh well - ordering a couple tomorrow.
