Just had the pleasure of getting a lift in a mates Audi r4 which had a rather expensive B&O system. Having never heard such a setup I was wondering what sort of money to replicate the quality and what roughly I'd need? The bass was so !

B&O stuff for the house is pretty average IMO, it looks nice and is well designed, but you're paying for the label rather than the quality. However they are far from being inferior too. Didn't realise they did car audio now too! Maybe in the car environment their stuff sounds better?

Agreed - you pay for the name and the "design".

Same will apply for car audio I imagine - you can probably get the same results for less.

I think the best system I ever heard from the factory was in the Mazda 6 (BOSE).

Now that stonked.

Its not just the cost of the system, its the architecture of the car and the positioning of the speakers, sound deadening, panel fit.

To replicate it exactly would be near on impossible

I'm with the others - B&O is pretty run of the mill as far as I'm concerned. In fact, it's probably worse than the majority and you are paying the premium for a badge (which in all honesty, does B&O really carry that much cache today?).

I had a 'Gold' Delco/Bose system in my previous Corvette, it was ******** ***** - to put it bluntly :D One amp per speaker, completely mental. Ate tape drive belts too. Loved the fact that some of the amps took longer to warm up/actually work than the others and you'd only have one speaker for about the first 5 mins of the journey!

Fortunately, the new Delco/Bose abomination in the newer one is actually a pretty good piece of kit, although the radio reception is a bit squiffy. I think that comes down more to the car than anything.

Things have come a long way since the 80s, that's for sure :D

We have Bose in my wife’s A4, its fine and it does the job, but it's not that special. B&O on the other hand is what many people not really into their HiFi view as high end HiFi, but there is much better kit for the same money from the more specialist high end manufacturers when you are discussing home set ups. Each to their own however, sound more than most things is very much in the ear of the beholder and subjective once you get into the more high end setups.

What you really need is an AM Vanquish with a Linn hifi fitted

B&O and Bose are OK, but more a design label/gimmick these days.

I have 2 cars with Bose systems - a 911 turbo and an Audi Q7. The system in the 911 is pretty poor but the Q7 system is the best of any car I've owned. It's simply in a different league with deep well-controlled bass and realistic presentation. You wouldn't think the systems were made by the same company.

and is testament to my comments about how they fit in the car.

I've heard a £79 Kenwood HU with a couple of cheapie amps in an A4 sound better than a £650 Pioneer HU with Genesis amps in a Mk2 Mondeo.

With cars, its not only about how the sound stage is set up, its about the quality of the materials the sound gets to bounce off (remembering door cards, shelf fabrics, etc).

I agree, but the Audi system is also far more detailed. I'm sure the conponents used are actually superior which is strange being as the Qy is half the price of the 911.
