Hi there,

I hold a B1 license as I passed my test in 2001 which, according to the DVLA states I can drive the following

You can drive vehicles up to 3,500kg Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) with up to 8 passenger seats (with a trailer up to 750kg).

You can also tow heavier trailers if the total weight of vehicle and trailer isn’t more than 3,500kg.

You can drive motor tricycles with a power output higher than 15kW if you are over 21 years old.

Physically disabled drivers with provisional category B entitlement will also have provisional entitlement to ride category A1 or A motor tricycles.

now, me and 5 friends are planning on driving a campervan to Ocktoberfest in Munich in September for much beer and merriment.

The camper van is a bailey approach 765 and is the following weights:

MTPLM 3850 kg 75.8 cwt
MRO 3217 kg 63.3 cwt

now, obviously my driving license allows me to drive up to 3500kg vehicle, so, as the MRO is 3217 this is fine, and I take it the 3850 is the max the vehicle can weigh full of water, fuel people etc??

Now, we are all over 6 ft and all weigh between 80-100kg which just about puts us under the MTPLM weight.

Now, does this count as going outside of my licence as the vehicle weighs more now it is full of people? I am confused and wondering if anyone understands these things.

Any help is appreciated.

Many thanks

My understanding is it is maximum authorised mass that determines what category you need. In this case it is 3850kg.

Delta is correct, the only figure that concerns you is the MAM, in this case you don't have the the required entitlement to drive this vehicle.

Thanks guys,

I contacted the renter today and they said I can drive it on the B licence so I assume it has been 'plated down' to 3500kg to allow for this.

and yes a B entitlement! I take it the other one allows me to ride a quad bike?

I also found out I can ride a moped and a tractor (f,k and p)

Plated weights relate to the MAM of the vehicle. If a vehicle is plated at 3500KG MAM, this means the vehicle and its contents, load or whatever it is carrying etc (maximum authorised total OVERALL mass) including all drivers, fuel etc must not exceed 3500k

So be careful, as if its plated at 3500kg and you end up running 3800kg after all you bods are inside it, not only do you not have the correct entitlement to drive it, you are also in the eyes of the law overweight.
