B2 bombers deployed in UK

the fact it is mentioned is only there to induce the fear emotion. it stimulates the links in your brain about the a-bomb arms race of tester-years and thus makes the article SEEM more interesting than it is.

journalism lols.

I still stand by my point that thinking bombers (nuclear or otherwise) are "cool" is ever so slightly psychopathic. Impressive? Sure. Works of "art" (in terms of engineering and precision)? Sure. Definitely not cool though.

You're just hooked on their journalism bait. How very naive of you.

I take it by your condescending tone that you somehow think that makes you better than me? :p

Wonder we're they'll be based?
They'll go to Fairford. The infrastructure - climate controlled hangers, facilities for maintaining the special skin etc - is already in place there. Plus the place is absolutely massive, there are only a couple of places where you can see the runway etc from public land so easy to police.

All show, the B2 is great for bombing a third/second world country but against Russia it's stealth wouldn't be very effective, it's all for the media to show team USA is not sitting idle.

If they really wanted to pressure Russia they would have sent B-1 Lancers instead, but then Russia might station Tu-160's and Tu-22m's near the border in response and we're back to the 1980's.

You can't find Ukraine on a map? With all due respect, you're not exactly painting yourself as a person who we should be listening to here.

I don't know really know what to make of this statement. Ukraine is not a small country, and knowing where it is on a map is not hard.

He's talking about Crimea not Ukraine, I know Crimea isn't a country but I'm pretty sure that's what he was trying to refer to, I hope.

Last I heard he had Crimea, not all of the Ukraine.
Besides, this was just hyperbole to indicate a country of limited relevance to me, not that I can't look at a map and find the word "Crimea" written in big letters.

I'd say having a nuclear deterrant based on our soil that we haven't paid for is quite a big benefit.

If Russuia went to war with America then the UK would be a target anyway, so having these based here isn't a bad thing.

We have bases in the US too. We just don't have cool ass planes to park at them :p.

I don't see it as a benefit at all. Something that is beyond our control but has implications potentially drastic for us is not in my eyes a benefit at all. I doubt Russia would ever go to war with the US in our lifetime if they didn't do it in the 70's-80's when they could have easily rolled over Europe then I doubt they'd do it now. Yes we have bases there too but whether we actually need to now is also debatable. But I believe we should have a more isolationist policy when it comes to the physical projection of military force.

Defence cooperation has no benefit to us as a country? Erm...

I didn't say that did I. I referred to this particular circumstance. Try rereading the first part of my post and you may realise I said the opposite to what you implied I said.

Well I figured that after, but Crimea isn't a country is it.

Crimea is part of the Ukraine which means Russia has invaded another country. By your train of thought if Russia invaded whales it would be ok because it's only a small part of Britain ??? This is how ww2 started, the rest of the world stood by and let one country slowly start to invade the countries around it by making excuses for them. It's time to stand up to Russia and make it clear we will not allow this to happen

Hyperbole aside, Crimea is not a country. And since when has the size of an area dictated it's strategic importance? If it was truly insignificant, why did the Russians want it? And even if the area itself was truly irrelevant, the aggression of Russia should not be.

Head in sand much?

Such an awesome plane! Probably one of my favourites.

Yeah it's awesome. The US are decades ahead of any other country with their aircraft technology. I served in the R.A.F. and had the pleasure of seeing close up how awesome some of their aircraft are. I never saw a B2 close up though. Personally, I see no problem with them deploying B2's to the UK. They've had permanent bases here for decades and deploying new aircraft is just a natural progression as older aircraft become obsolete.

Because it was full of ethnic Russians who apparently quite like being part of Russia?
IIRC it was part of Russia before we bribed Ukraine to secede, all they are doing is taking that bit back. Big deal, and not something to wave your military at.

We should all step back and let their internal politics sort itself out, adding external military pressure is not big and not clever.

Whales isnt a country though is it, its a large sea going mammal...

I welcome them , in fact a whole squadron please . I am sure that the RAF would give there right arm to have an effective strike bomber that has stealth capabilities , our Tornados are getting a little old now .

A nuclear detterent for free , he'll yes.

We didn't bribe Ukraine to do anything, no idea where you're getting that from. And the Crimea should not have been allowed to secede from Ukraine full stop; Britain, the US and Russia all agreed to respect the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

And we should absolutely bring full pressure to bare on Russia. Deploying troops and planes in Poland and the Baltic's should be just the start. Russia needs to be systematically weakened and undermined once more.

He said the aircraft are nuclear capable, not that they will be bringing nukes with them.

edit; beaten ;o

Though it's nothing to be alarmed over. We have our own nukes here.

Indeed, it's just hyperbole. I believe our nukes are on submarines that do laps of the UK.

As an aside, I was reading an article based on a freedom of information request for Devonport dockyard (the naval base in Plymouth where they refit nuclear subs etc). We live in Plymouth, but use to be near the base and never heard a peep. However, they've accidentally launched training torpedeos while docked and had a number of fires while nuclear subs were docked. Makes you wonder!
