So 50p per application. Indium is £20 for a 100mm x 100mm sheet which is good for 25 20mm x 20mm squares which is a little under £1 apiece and unlike the paste can be reused and are quicker to fit. One where economies of scale come into play.

The average person doesn't have 25 devices to use it on so it's a poor way to compare costs. In any case, the current most popular desktop platform and the topic in this thread uses the AM4 platform which is 40mmx40mm, so you would only get 4 usable applications from it. That would be £5 per application using your math. You ignored the fact that most good coolers already come with a tube of thermal paste that will probably be good for the lifetime of the cooler. Also, 1-2 degrees do matter.
