Possibly the best pic ive taken so far imo. Im well chuffed. :D I found this little fella sitting on a leaf in the garden. Its a baby I think because it was tiny, and was just warming up in the sun. He sat there for ages and barely moved.

Is the tip of its face slightly OOF? It looks like the focus is just behind its head.

Other than that a lovely photo. :)

I don't think the face is oof. Having said that, the dof was silly small. The whole butterfly was about 1-1.5cm across, so im pretty much resting the lens on the poor little thing, so the plane of focus might be a little out.

Great shot mate. Lovely colors, good dof and composition.
What lens? I'm thinking of doing some macro too.

Cheers. Stock 18-55mm Nikon lens, with a cheap Hoya closeup filter attachment.

Edit; here's another, slightly toned down version.

Not much to say but to repeat everyone else, tis a Very nice shot, Isay a very nice shot ;)

Just a thought regarding the bokah you have produced, I think on a shot like this it what you have got works well, the bokeh doesn't take the focus away from the subject but rather highlights it. But on a portrait the bokeh would look more pleasing on the eye if it was circular rather than nondescript blur. I am wondering what lens would you need to get 'circular' bokeh. I think it has to do with the shape of the aperture blades, curved blades will get you round bokeh and straight blades will get you hexagonal bokeh, actual shape depends on how many and the shape of the blades in the aperture ring.

Example of 'circular' bokah

Can't really help you there im afraid. All I know is that mirror lenses can produce doghnut shaped highlights. Personally I prefer a really blurred, soft bokeh in most shots.

:D Im happy with it, but its not 100% right. If you look closely, the face is slightly oof. :( I only took a few with black felt behind. Should have tried more really.

The shot in the OP is excellent. The only thing that spoils it is that the eye (or the bottom of the eye) is slightly out of focus. I find my eye drawn to the wing rather than the eyes and that kind of detracts from the image a bit.

In the grand scheme of things though thats a minor detail, it's a great photograph :) I do prefer the composition of the first shot from your second set though.

What lens is that? The bokeh is beautiful.
