I don't want to turn this place into mumsnet, but I've been tasked with buying a baby monitor but I'd like to get some tips from parents on here.

My gf wants one with pressure pads (?) so that it'll tell if the baby stops breathing/moving.

I have absolutely no idea what's best so I'm just after some ideas. Thanks!
No idea on budget either, just bring your suggestions!

From my experience the more **** that comes with it the more obsessed you'll be about it.

* Oh she's stopped breathing
* Oh I can't hear her breathing
* Oh I can't see her, has she fallen out the cot?!

We ditched out fancy one for a simple one, still used it as a way for my daughter to talk to us when she wants to (she's 5 now - it's her intercom lol) The fancy ones frankly are a complete waste of cash, don't know any of my friends who used it, most ended up unplugging the additional stuff. If a baby isn't happy they'll cry - and damn you'll hear them regardless. After a few weeks you'll barely need the monitor anyway as you'll learn the baby's routine anyway, usually very frequently during the night..

FWIW, he's 3 months this week and we've survived perfectly well without it until now. Just asking as she asked me to investigate weeks ago... :o

Similar mrs, bought monitor, baby arrived, 2 months later returned monitor. You don't need one unless you live in a mansion.

If she insists, most friends are happy with their motorolas.

The angel brand are supposed to be the best brand for this type of monitor. I would recommend you read up on some Amazon reviews for them as they can work really well, but also not work at all depending on the mattress being used in the cot.

Edit: nothing wrong with this type of monitor and will give good peice of mind when you move your baby into their own room. Really going baby's should be sleeping in your presence so that they can get used to your breathing rhythm. It is also to help in case of SIDs which means in theory you know that they have stopped breathing and can react faster to the situation.

Ha ha :)

We used a standard BT one for our first and didn't even bother getting it back out for our second. Haven't missed it at all. Belated congratulations. :)

We used an angel care one, with a pad for sensors for breathing.
I wouldn't buy a monitor so you can hear if the baby is crying unless you have a mansion, or spend your day outside.... you'll simply hear it anyway.
I was happy to have the sensor pads, as they provided me with reassurance.

I would hear crying, I wouldn't hear a lack of sound or breathing while I slept.
Thankfully no such wakeup ever occurred.

Yeah i wouldnt waste money on a top line all singing all dancing monitor.
We got by with a basic phillips avent monitor.
Only really use it now when our little girl is under the weather or we have guests round and were in the extension/kitchen.
No need for anything else tbh they are so sensitive to even slighest of sounds as it is.

The angel care one is the monitor and sensor you are looking for. No point going for a video monitor, you will hear if they are crying.

Just bought an angel care one, the expensive one with the sensor. I wouldn't have bothered but our baby is in special care so will be more cautious when she comes home. Haven't used it but having read through the instructions and looking at the build quality it seems decent enough.

We got the angelcare one but it wanted me to carve a piece of wood for it... It went back to amazon.

It's amazing the amount of money a women will convince you need to spend on your first. We had a standard monitor but only for when you're downstairs watching tv and to monitor the room temperature more than heart rate.

The other pile of **** they have you wasting money on that you sell for £100 six months later is a travel system. Like getting married, every other sane man tells you it's a waste of money but you go ahead and do it anyway.

I'm getting bugged to buy a changing unit...waste of money in my opinion but suppose I better get used to buying overpriced unessential stuff. Makes me annoyed stuff aimed for babies is 3x the price as the same thing aimed at anyone else...

We have a travel system, used a handful of times but useful to have. A lot of this stuff can be sold 2nd hand and they hold their values well.

We had a basic audio only monitor which was ideal for us, or so we thought.

Our baby boy was about 9 months and he'd been in his cot for about 3 hours one night and something was niggling in the back of my mind to go and check him over. I was glad I did as he'd been massively sick and had not woken up, he eyes were caked shut and he was literally covered in it, was dreadful and it obviously could have been a lot worse.

He was in our room until he was about 5 months old and from moving him to his own room we left him to it once he was in there and asleep, like previous posters have said you'll typically know when they want/need your attention.

Needless to say after this little incident I went out and bought a video monitor. Almost a year on it turns out we'd didn't really need to and thankfully nothing like it has happened again, but we're glad we bought one. Better safe than sorry. Ours is a Tomy one and it was about £80.00, the resolution of the screen is 'ok' but it does the job.

We got one of the Motorola ones with a camera. I wasn't really fussed about having one but the missus wanted it so I caved, £45 we paid as it was on offer on Amazon at half price and they did an Amazon family promotion for a further £15 off.

To be fair it's been really good, there are times in the night that Elsie will cry in her sleep and settle off again 30 seconds later, or when she's babbling in the morning but just pacifying herself, it's saved us jumping out of bed as much as we might have otherwise. I'd definitely recommend it.

There are a couple of threads on here fairly recently about baby monitors and new baby essentials if you have a search.

Also congratulations mate :)
