Just had my 97 Fiesta 1.25 MOT'd for the first time since i bought it six months back.

He told me its all ok, just a few advisory notices but nothing majour.

I've just had a good look through the documents they gave me and its left me a little confused.

I have three: -

First is a VT20 green MOT Test Certificate, which says it now runs out in NOV 2009 etc. I believe this is my Pass Cert?

Second is a VT23 Yellow Advisory Notice with two things printed down.

Third one is what confused me. Its a red document labled VT30 Refusal of an MOT Test Certificate. This says "Reasons for refusal of test certificate - Offside headlamp aim aimed so that it dazzles other road users"

The way this document is worded suggests the car didnt pass the MOT.

Confused, anyone put my mind at ease?

Maybe it failed and he fixed it and retook the MOT?

I dont know mate, im a bit new to this. This is my first MOT experience so im a little confused as to what they mean!

I can take photos if you need? Im thinking he just adjusted it himself then passed it for me

What the hell?

A green one is the pass if I'm not mistaken? As above, maybe they fixed the aim and re-did the MOT?

When I have had a fail before I just got the fail notice which wasn't a green cert....

Also, I have had BS from a dealer before with them saying that an advisory means problems were there that are sorted. It does my head in. Whenever I go to buy a car and ask for the advisory notice (which the the MOT states is present) they mysteriously never have it.

its failed

but then obviously he's aligned the headlamp so that it can pass

Legally speaking, once he starts the MOT, he cant then fix something in the middle of the MOT to make it pass. He can finish the test, then make alterations and put it through a re-test

Which is what he will have done.

So basically, its failed on the headlamp position. Hes then fixed it for free and re-MOT'd it and passed it for me?

He didn't say anything like this to me! He just said everything is ok, few advisorys nothing major!

yeah just sounds like he did it again. IIRC they only have to check what failed and a headlamp takes 2 minutes to correct the aim.

MOT Pass, Expires Nov 2009

Re-aligning headlamp aim has been a freebie for a while, but yeah he will have had to register it as a fail thanks to the computerised system they now use, in the good old days they'd have adjusted it during the test.

Green is the mot cert, Yellow shows items that may need attention in the future, you're going to need a brake pipe and a tyre replacing for next year looking at that (I get one every year for worn trailing arm bushes on my vectra, they say they cant fail it on them because the arm wont fall off should the bush disintergrate! Completely oblivious to the fact that those bushes control the toe-in of the rear wheels and that it has introduced rear steer to the car!).

I expected it to fail because my mate put a new anti roll bar on it, but didnt put the new anti roll bar bushes on, the plan was to mot it, see if it fails on anything else, then he would do it all together when he puts the anti roll bar bushes on or whatever there called!

Cheers for the info guys, didn't want to be driving around without an MOT hehe. Just got to renew my TAX now which is up end of the month.
