It's not always about working harder though is it.

My dad has worked hard his entire life to support his family, probably still never earned more than £25k, doesn't mean he doesn't work hard.

Did he work hard at improving his salary, improving skills, learning new abilities, worked hard at climbing the corporate ladder, worked hard at earning extra degrees, accreditation, masters degree etc., work hard t communication, interpersonal and networking skills, did he work hard at negotiation and interview techniques?

You can work hard at stacking shelves but that is not going to get you as far as realizing shelf stacking is not going to be paid highly and thus working hard at a degree that can be leveraged to earn a higher salary later in life.

Not everyone has the inherent skills to be a top engineer or manager but one can certainly push themselves quite far

Whilst self improvement is to be lauded, chasing the £ sign isn't the only measure of a persons success in life. Personally I find the nasty cut throat attempts people make to climb the corporate leader deplorable.
