Have been drawn back to it once more, this time I have started to play Alliance with some mates of mine from Ducatisti.

I have statred a human mage, got to 12 in 4 hours last night which wasnt too bad, but seeing as i don't know any quests or where to go I can't complain.

Questions are:

1) What is the best leveling spec at low lvls for a mage? Or overall, now that 3.1.0 has come out i honestly dont know what has been tweaked :(

2) How long should it take these days to get to 60? Long?

3) Have mages been nerfed to hell or have they still got some fun left in them?

Was always frost for levelling. Endless kiting of 29,000 mobs at a time. no idea now.

couple of days if you play solid.

probably nerfed. last time i played mages were good, so unles sthey're paladins, anything that's good gets destroyed eventually.

I wont be playing solid unfortunatly, have a job to attend to, only be playing 4 or so hours a night :(

exact same situation agnes, im playing seriously casually, rotating between 4 chars dependent on my mood.

Levelled lots of chars before so it should be quite fast, just dont know what im going to do when i get to 80 :p

I have never raided, always played rogues, even since pre 1.10 (good old days), so this will be my first non rogue main! Scarey

Not sure if i want to keep to PVP this time as i always did. Might try raiding out... hmmm

Destro Warlock > *

I can remember doing casual PVP in destro raid spec, SB insta SB death coil and the shaddow burn thing = 10+k of damage :D

Haven't played since TBC hit (naxx / bwl 40 mans > anything nowadays, but that's another story...).

Will have to disagree with the other opinioins here.

Fire for levelling, at least until later on. With regards to kiting masses of mobs, you need a decent amount of talent points to invest before frost becomes beneficial - cold snap, shatter, imp frostbolt, imp CoC etc... can't really remember the names now, but i would definately reccommend sticking with imp fireball, imp fireblast, etc etc...

When levelling up at the start fire kills mobs before they reach you, frost gives you a less downtime but much longer to kill mobs.

I've also recently gone back to WoW after about a 3 year break. Last thing I raided was BWL before AQ40 came out. :)

Currently got a level 14 Troll Hunter on Al'Akir called Garrett and a level 16 Undead Rogue on Steamwheedle Cartel called Zool. Can anyone recommend a leveling spec for the Hunter? I hear Beastmastery is the best.

go for a mix of afli and demonology as you level as this gives you a tank/dot/low downtime build. Look for talents that increase your demons damage/threat to a mob and also spells that give you good damage over time spells and health regen for use with lifetap.

They work out about the same, the time you spend with fire blasting is short but you are down more, with frost you can normally squeeze in noe or 2 extra kills from the same mana pool, longer but less down time. So as i said, seems to be the same either way, just depends what you like i guess.

As a 4 year veteran and former owner of 6 Alliance lv70's which included a mage, I thought I'd give you my opinions as well.

1.) I leveled, well, almost power-leveled my mage as fire. I kept seeing frost spec around me and wanted to try something else. Your best pure DPS spec will be a Arcane/Fire mixture with Frost (I grudgingly say) your best leveling spec for pure kiting and mass mobs. Fire is awesome for single target pulling and destruction. Almost overpowered to be honest.

2.) Depends how much you play. It took me over a month to get my hunter to lv12, but I played about 60min a week, so it was understandable. Yesterday, I started playing at around 1pm and at 5pm I was lv20. Now leveling becomes quicker, so I'd say around 5 days of solid playing lv60+ is totally possible.

3.) Don't know that, they've always been in joint second place for pure DPS with combat rouges and warriors, behind a destro lock, but that might have changed. Although, I can't see too much since they are only a DPS class and would become useless and extinct very quickly if nerfed too badly.

One last thing about a caster class. I leveled my mage to 70 in about a week, got her epic'd out in 3 days and quit playing her after my first 3 hours in Black Temple ( I didn't even finish the raid and faked a DC) since it became mind numbingly boring to spam fireballs the whole night. I cut my WoW teeth on tanking and casting seemed dull with zero action compared to tanking.

just my 2 silver :D

For leveling a Mage 0-60 Frost is always recommended, it gives you better survivability and handy for AOE grinding.. I don't remember what I did 60-70 as but seem to recall it being Fire, mainly because I did lots of instances and fire was the spec to be at the time. 70-80 I did as Arcane and to be honest loved it, the burst damage from an Arcane mage is awesome and I also use that now in raids. You can now have Dual Spec for 1000G and that is very usefull for instantly changing from 1 spec to another. I presently have Arcane spec and Frost.

If they are still doing it, there's a recruit a friend where if you both play together you get triple xp to 60. Could easily get to 60 in a few days..

I'd say Mages are fun, as for nerfed well that depends who you talk to, some other classes will say they need to be nerfed and some mages say they need a buff. There's no problems with DPS it's good, if you are refering to PvP then mages still hold their own, Paladins seem to be the OP class atm but as a mage I don't find them to be a problem at all (when I play my warrior that's a different story)...

I've got a 70 Mage but I haven't played him for a while. Like all classes, you'll find it easier to whip through up to level 65 or so as Blizzard have made it easier to level.

Personally, I would suggest Fire up to your mid-levels - say 35-40 and then Frost up to 60. At 60 you can make a decision, stick with Frost, go with Fire or be a complete madman and specialise in Arcane - I swapped talents with my mage so many times it costs me 50g to respec him now :D

Yup, mages in PVP, especially Frost specced, can be a huge headache. For PVE raid spec, I strongly recommend looking at a Arcane specced mixed with Fire to get that instant Pyro (can't remember the talent name now). In TBC it was not uncommon for our mages to hover around 2k DPS and Arcane Missiles to hit for 1.5k each followed by a 10k instant Pyro crit. That is some serious serious damage.

Don't mean to hijack your thread Agnes, but I have a quick question and didn't want to make a new thread solely for that purpose.

Can anyone give advice on leveling a hunter?. Leveling spec, raid and PVP performance spec, best professions etc. All the hunters in our community last year was BM spec and while I know sweet all nothing about hunters, I'm pretty sure that is a leveling/PVP spec? Their DPS was crappy too.
Or any dedicated WoW Hunter sites worth a look?

Elite Jerks is a really really good site for DPS specs ect.

For Hunter professions. Skinning and Leatherworking. Skinning gives crit and Leathworking gives massive attack power enchants. Level them together and your laughing.
