hi im looking for a cheapo external hardrive to back up data should i get a internal hdd and use it outside the case as i have sata on the outside of my case, something that looks quite nice.

If you have eSATA onboard then that's the way to go. There are a couple of options for caddies from OCUK:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-004-BT&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=72 - this one's the cheaper one but if you want to use the USB connection you need to open the caddy up and swap cables.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-023-BT&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=72 - this one allows use of either eSATA or USB without changing anything on the caddy.

You'll need to source your own SATA drive to go in either.

I have the one in rpstewart's 1st link, and very good it is too!

The one in the 2nd link, I reckon is worth the few extra £s, if having to open it to change connection type matters to you. :)
