Im looking for suggestions on the best software to use for my needs, i want to be able to create an image of my OS hard drive on a redundant drive i have stored in my pc that i van use to reinstall at a later date.
would really like this to be done through a bootable disc rather than windows, either a software i purchase or a free utility would be fine though i would prefer a free one.

I have Acronis 11 and can't figure out if this is possible. Can I copy a basic installation of Vista to a bootable DVD?

You need to create a bootable CD from within ATI 11 (Create bootable rescue media), which you then use to boot into DOS and run ATI when needed. :)

Blah.....
Do it all in DOS (the proper way ;) ) No need to install any software in windows, Nortons Ghost Corp 4 the win :p
E-Mail me if you want a very simple guide to follow! (addy is on my sig below, just click it!)

Its ok, I do have a second HD and an external one, and I can figure out how to backup to them. I was just curious about backing up to DVD.

Don't mean to sound dim, but what is ATI 11? I can create a bootable DVD but how do I then copy the HD to it.

You can't make a bootable DVD like you want, what you do is first make a backup of your OS using the wizard, which you can split over several DVDs. Use the bootable media tool to make a DOS verson of Acronis(using a CD). When it comes time to reinstall windows, you insert the dos version of acronis at boot up and then you insert the backed up DVDs when prompted

With True image you install the program, then choose whether to run a live backup (it locks any open files) or create a boot cd (small linux image) which then runs the program with no interferance from windows, I am using true image echo server for a customers ML 350 with Server 2003 sbs and the backups are made nightly from within windows and backup onto rotated 250gb hard drives.
