Got an email today from a place called backcheck. Company is requesting a background check but been in job 3 years!

Seems a bit weird, I have nothing to hide but can't see why they would want to do it.

Anyone had something similar?

legitimate company they did a background check on me.

Check the email address against their official website see if its actually the. Obviously dont give them anything via email though.

Id check with HR too to make sure its legit, but we had to have CRB check every few years, suppose it depends on your job if they had to run these every so often but having a CRB done a few years into employment isn't overly unusual.
But make sure with HR first.

What exactly have they asked for, no one will say we will do a background check..they will specific what kind of check, such as CRB, SC, DV and so on...they also wouldn't ask this by email...check with your line manager and HR dept before making any reply. It may be that a new client requires such a check, but this should be done through more formal channels than email. Sounds dodgy to me.

CRB checks are done every 3 years as a rule, did you have one done when you started?

Just got an email saying my company blah blah has requested a background check with a link to an online form.

Will talk to boss / HR tomorrow see if it's legit

They are a legitimate company; I completed one of their checks this morning.

It's credit check, criminal record, employment history, education and possible conflicts of interest. It's not a security check.

I have a rule where I don't give out personal information to anyone who asks for it and that I need to ensure the identity and validity of anyone who requests it regardless if they're a legit company.

For what purpose though? Did your HR department request some information from you or that you supply info to this company?

I assume you didn't just respond to a random email asking for some info?

not necessarily - if its just a private agency/security company they might well not have a neat acronym to describe it other than a 'background check' which might simply involve looking at your credit score, phoning up previous employers and having you account for any gaps in your CV

would have expected HR/line manager to inform people in advance if this was happening
