So, I asked my brother to back up a few of my DVDs for me... and I'm not sure how he did it, but it looks like he may have simply copied the directories off the DVD onto my laptop. And while I can play it using WMP-HC's 'open directory' option, I'd rather have notmal AVIs. Plus this would let me get rid of all the unskippable rubbish at the beginning, which is always good. But... what's the best way to convert them like this? I'm pretty sure its easier if I just wait for him to bring the dvds back so I can rip them better initially, but I'm impatient. So... what's the easiest way? I had a glance at the 'useful freeware utilities' thread, and found an insanely long list of programs, of which I have no idea which are any good, and which can do what I want, given that they seem to deal directly with the DVDs, rather than the contents of the DVD( the whole video_TS files and so on).

If someone knows of a program which could do this, it'd save me some time, so I'd be very grateful :)

Had trouble with AGK as it wasn't liking the ifo file for some reason. Handbreak, however, is working fantastically! Thanks for the quick replies!

I just tried Make MKV recvommened in another thread and it made light work of my dvd. Backed it up to MKV (large file size). Then if you like use handbrake to re-encode to any other format/size. I struggled trying to rip dvd's direct with handbrake but as a re-encoder it is awesome!
