Backing up Firefox.

MozBackup is THE only solution for complete firefox backup.

It backs up Firefox exactly as it is right down to the last change you made on your favourite extension.
 
If I wanted to backup my Firefox folder, I'd browse to C:\Documents and Settings\Michael\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox and copy that folder to my backup drive.

No need to mess about with other programs, and when I reinstall I copy that folder back (after reinstalling Firefox) - and Firefox is EXACTLY how I left it last, right down to the history. :eek::cool:

Except, as I've posted previously, it isn't complete. It only backs up files that have been added to a list it has.

There's the option of a complete copy as basmic suggests, or import/export as modo77 suggested. The latter won't copy your extensions, saved passwords, history or anything else though, but you'll probably save transferring a lot of the cruft that builds up in profiles.

It is complete, I've restored FF to a complete "last state" using Mozbackup with no loss of anything (windows upgrade form xp to vista) and also migrated the same backup onto another pc. It's the exact same state as the source state using mozbackup. Mozbackup backs up everything even if it does not state so in the program list itself.

The better thing about mozbackup compared to the above method though is that you can restore FF using just a particular level of restore.
EG: you can restore FF with just all extensions configured as they were without importing bookmarks or the cookie store - something you would not be able to do by just copying the folder without manually going through the subfolders and user chrome folders for the extensions and settings.

I find a feature like that useful as I often take my mozbackup to work where I don't want to restore cookies or saved form data etc for security reasons or when I'm installing FF on a friends PC and want to give them a nicely set up firefox with all the best extensions all ready to go but not have them inherit my saved passwords and personal data.

The creator begs to differ (my emphasis):
MozBackup backups and restores others extensions too but if these extensions create new files in your user profile with setting, MozBackup doesn't backups these files.

Only as long as Mozbackup knows what file the (for example) cookie store lives in, and that's a premise that falls apart in Fx3, with history and bookmarks combined in a single places.sqlite file.
There's certainly no need to touch userchrome for extensions or settings.
 
FX3 is not final yet, if you're using FX3 then you're not going to be worried about backups because you're always 3 steps ahead being a beta tester ;)

As for the extensions thing, yes that is true but that only applies to a handful of extensions, I have 18 extensions installed none of which have issue and the majority of them are the most popular ones off the mozilla extensions page.

If it was a complete backup, it wouldn't matter what version you ran ;)
 
BTW mozbackup now does support FF3 as well as many extension subdirectories :)
 
toilen is right, mozbackup doesn't copy all extension settings, but it does the job for me :)

plus, toilen is the firefox god of ocuk
