Hi guys

anything i need to know when i back up my games.

i've seen the option to back up games.
do i need to seperately find and store the saves?

i have 2 drives. one for storage which is where i'll be backing up to.

games are bfbc2, black ops and mw2. the rest i'm not too bothered about.

oh and what about my steam password. not sure if i can remember what it is.

thanks

Don't use the Steam backup utility.

Just copy the Steamapps folder over. Then reinstall Steam. It will do the rest.

You will need your password though!

Steam backup is a waste of time.
Copy the entire steam directory to another location and zip it or rar it.
Then when you need to reinstall, copy it back, and then rerun steam, it'll find the install files, and this process will work significantly faster than steam backup.

Secondly, you might at the same time wish to backup your 'my documents' folder, as this will contain locations for many steam savegames. Which you likely don't wish to lose. Stema backup to the best of my knowledge won't save these.

I used steam backup to save all my games when I changed from XP to W7 last year, but when I tried to reinstall none of them worked & I had to do a massive amount of downloading.

At the time I figured I'd made a schoolboy error as steam would have detected my O/S when I originally bought the games & provided me with XP based software which I was then trying to install on W7. Just putting it here in case you are using different operating systems, if I'm barking up the wrong tree then someone will point it out.

Sorry to hijack your thread OP,but i have a quick question

I have over 120gb of steam games and around Xmas time im buying a new SSD or other HDD.

I want to transfer Steam onto the new drive?,is this possible or do i have to download all the games again and reinstall steam on the new drive?

Could you not have read the posts that already explain how to do that in this very thread?

Copy and paste your steam folder. Job done.

bear with me guys i'm a lot dumber than i look.........

so i find my steam folder, copy it somewhere safe.

once i've re installed windows just copy the file back to the same location then install steam again.

will this really work? is it really that simple?

Yep should actually just need to run the steam.exe its that simple

You'll need to copy savegame folders around too. Valve saves will be in the steam folder, but other games will save to various folders in Documents.

I just copy my \Steam\SteamApps folder (it has all the GFC's and so on in it).

When i need to restore, Install steam and update it
then copy your \steam\steamapps folder into the steam dir

When you run steam, it will update or sync your games as necessary

aha...this is what i was after...something a little more specific.

thanks for all your help guys.....much appreciated.

1 more problem.

bfbc2 shows up on steam but isn't a steam game.

is there a way to back up this.

have just updated using the updater. don't really want to download another 2.9 gig patch.
