Can someone point me in the right direction for backup software for Windows Server 2003.

I would idealy like a program which can just backup changed files, rather than having to back up a whole folder again.

I would also like the prgram to backup SQL, but compress the files so they are not taking up lots of backup space.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Just had a look at the pricing for backup exec, not wanting to pay as much as that. Does anyone have any experiance of Backup assist?

if you have budget constraints then you could just run a maintenance plan against your sql database that includes a backup. then, just backup the files this produces within whatever you choose to use to backup the rest of the server.

Do a flat backup of SQL using the enterprise manager console?

yeah, but that doesnt compress the DBs. I have also had problems with enterpise manager running for a few days then an error happens and the backup doesnt start again until i manually tell it to which is a little frustrating.

If Server 2003s inbuilt backup utility doesn't cover sql databases then its another call for backup exec 11d with the sql agent, used this to recover a law firm not long back and it did very well.

Servers backup util can be found by following "Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Backup", or typing ntbackup in run.

A bit messy but you could use a maintenance plan like people have suggested then use something like a scheduled batch job with gzip to compress the backups?

For your server files you could use mirroring with robocopy if its just over the network and for SQL server....

Have used SQL backup (redgate) and litespeed(quest) so you could try one of these, they both offer encryption as well. SQL Server 2008 offers compression I believe so perhaps you can make do until the next upgrade?
