Backpacking acorss europe, why not?

I would keep it open ended too.

We had NO idea where we would go next... we were in Belgium and no trains to berlin so we literally said "HAHA LETS GO BRUGE", it's nice to have that freedom and not give a rats ass.

It's all dependant on your friends though and what they want. The only bad time we had was arriving in Berlin at around 6pm with nowhere to stay, hostels were all full, ended up in the circus hotel where they sorted us out with a studio apartment for the night at a discount. That turned out to be positive though as the staff were amazing, spent the entire day finding somewhere for us to stay while we were out around the town. We then moved into the Melia on the riverfront, very nice place and right next to the Reichstag.

I have three favourite places:

Berlin
Hungary
Rome

All filled with friendly people and very good nightlife.

Did this this summer with the other half, our route was pretty simple, keeping accommodation on a tight budget. Saved some money using a Eurail Pass but it needs researching for the best savings.

Paris
Berlin
Munich
Venice
Florence
Rome
Nice
Barcelona
London

Munich! You should try and get there, fantastic atmosphere in the city and the beer is cheap (like anywhere else in Germany).

I've only recently got back from backpacking around Europe.

Best advice i can give is to have a rough idea of where you want to go but do not book in advance, having the freedom to do what you want is great you will meet loads of people along the way and may end up following them around for a bit you never know.

When we did it we went to:
Amsterdam
Berlin
Prague
Krakow
Vienna
Budapest
Zagreb
Ljubljana
Munich

then flights home from Amsterdam.

I highly recommend Munich such a great city and atmosphere and if its a nice day to go the English parks and jump in the rapids they have there! then get a 1litre beer from the beer garden afterwards.

Also a hostel chain i can recommend is Wombats they are well priced and have an awesome breakfast! (although you do have to pay). We stayed in there hostels in Vienna and Munich really top notch. Also if you have previously stayed in their hostel and have proof you can get a free breakfast.

i'd dramatically cut down the number of countries.

I spent over 22 days just travelling in Italy and Austria. Getting the train about is awesome though!

I started in Rome then trained it to > pisa, venice, cinque de terre, bologna, florence, then into Austria for salzburg, hallstatt and viena. I only went into Austria because i found a picture of hallstatt online randomly during the trip and decided it was close enough to go have a look at :D

(not in correct order)

Watch the movie "Hostel" before going, it has lots of useful tips for surviving a backpacking trip in Europe. :)

Surely I am not the first to mention this...Oktoberfest - Germany...that's your first stop.

Sweden & Finland are very expensive, I would pick one or the other and not both. I think Stockholm is probably worth seeing above Helsinki, though that's a matter of opinion.

I spent a month going around Munich, Prague, Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, Villany (wine growing region in southern Hungary), Zagreb, Split and finishing with about a week on the Croatian island of Hvar and Vis.

What kind of stuff do you like, are you interested in?:

history/ visiting museums/ art galleries/ nice beer/cheap beer/ attractive woman/ strip clubs/ a beach?

If you say what you want to get out of the trip it will be easier to advise.

How are you travelling? Interrail is ~£400, flights to the continent ~£100. I'd budget £20pppn accommodation and then there's spending money, trips (rafting will be around £80 in France/Switzerland. Some cities are VERY expensive (£6+ for a pint).
I spent around £3000 when I did it.

You could probably do it for a grand all in, but doubt you'd be able to 'do' much.
