i have the msi 980ti gaming 6g the red and black themed one with the metal back plate, just spent an hour on far cry 4 and gpu temps were reaching 78c went to feel how hot the backplate was and litterally i can not touch any part of it at all.

Is that pretty normal or something now sound right

Well it's probably about 78C and that is bloody hot.

What is super hot to us is barely warm to PC components.

well it is doing the work dis-passing some of the heat. You could mod a little fan blowing on top to help it a little. As long as your GPU/VRAM and VRM temps are below 90 degree there is nothing to worry about.

Sell it and buy a new one.
...graphics card owners and their temperature concerns........
:D

Have to say I don't get the purpose of the back plate other than hiding the back of the PCB. I would have thought it would insulate in (trap) heat? Air flowing over a bare PCD I would have thought would be better.

I think people feel more comfortable handling the backplate instead of touching the bare PCB. Plus it looks better.

If anything, that's a good thing! It's actually helping to dissipate heat. Some cards just have a habit of insulating the back, making it worse.

Depends on the back plate. Some are plastic and will just trap heat. Some are aluminium and actually have thermal pads between the back plate and the vrms to help dissipate heat.

Not all manufacturers backplates are equal.

Create a custom fan profile on MSI AB to blow more air..... at 75C @ 90% fan speed curve will be good.

not on this card it's backed of with metal studs so no contact with the pcb in any place, might take it off and fir some thermal pads lol.

That's nothing, 390X backplates reach 90C+

Run a 78c bath and let us know what it's like :)

Much cooler than in the 90's! :)

If you touch anything 78c/174f you going to get burnt.

Put you hand in the oven set it to 60c and after 20min feel the burn baby. :p

Anything over 45-50c will burn you to the touch. ;)

You need chinese chippy fingers if you up to them capers! :D

My zotac amp extreme has a metal backplate but from what i can tell it looks like it doesn't even make contact with the PCB or any components on the back i just think the small air gap is enough to transfer heat to the backplate to get it hot. Was debating on adding thermal pads to help transfer the heat to the backplate but then thought it would probably insulate more than anything. + warranty lol.
