In acme's chair.
As title. I need to get the backplate that came with my Kuhler 620 off of the motherboard, but the adhesive sponge pads are stuck fast and I can't get it off.

I have already tried pulling it as hard as I possibly can and it won't come un-stuck and i'm worried about damaging the board.

What do I do?

Could I try warming up the adhesive with a hairdryer?

A thin craft knife inbeteen and cut through each pad? Warm it up a little with a hairdryer and try twisting it free rather than pulling it off?

Actually you need to pull it off not twist as it has tiny pins that go through the mb holes

I would be worried about damaging the board if I used a knife. And I can't twist it because there are standoffs attached to the backplate which are through the cooler screw/clip holes on the board. :(

*edit* ah replied before your edit. :p

Any wd40 lubricating spray? Spray a tiny bit where each pad is an let it soak a while, then it should pull off,wd40 is non conductive but wipe off any residue after, alcahol would work the same way

Funny story, there is a tonne of WD40 and all kinds of other useful things in the garage, but my parents went on holiday, and I think the keys to the garage are in my Dad's jacket pocket in the suitcase...

I'll just try the hairdryer first. Would the board be OK with the heat on the back?

yeah if you don't get it red hot, just warm imo

don't you have any thermal paste remover? few drops where each pad is and let it absorb it,it will dissolve the glue sticking it on

I have got it off now, I heated up the pads with a hairdryer and got it off, it left some residue though...

Does vodka conduct electricity?

no it will evapourate, just give it 5 mins after you've used to to disappear

Alright, ive used some cheap vodka to get the worst of it off, but there is still some slightly tacky residue.

Ive also figured out what I did. You know on the back of a motherboard with a modern Intel socket, there is the metal CPU socket backplate, and it has a wide part above and below the socket?

The adhesive pads were supposed to go on there... 2 years ago when I built my PC, I put the backplate on the wrong way round and stuck the pads to the back of the PCB. :D

Check out the sudden downgrade (in sig) :p

I only know of wd40 or thermal paste remover/nail varnish remover or meths
