Backup and restore

Since I built my PC nearly 3 years ago I have had trouble backing up system-

This started when I noticed that I only had 70gb left out of the Samsung 250Gb SSD - I then found 131Gb was backup files so went into system protection and reduce the available space.

I then bought a Toshiba external drive with USB3 and used that for backup but even then it was a failure. So now I have just got a new HDD and installed it and tried to set it up.

Here lies the problem - I started up Backup and restore and got this box up.

It seems to get to 4.60GB and stops although I have allocated 500GB for back up.

I have been into System properties and turned off system protection for C drive and turned it on for J drive and all sorts of ticking on and off that I felt needed to be on or off - But to no avail - so now put it all back to how it was.

I have another 1TB drive partitioned up but none are anywhere near full.

So I am stumped

I have googled my problem which took me to system properties etc but I can't see where I am going wrong.

Thanks

Just use the free version of Macrium Reflect. The only feature missing from the free version is incremental backups and even they are available if you choose to use the boot disk/USB stick.

Did you format the new drive as NTFS?

Yes I did

What is it with people and backing up full systems like that. I would just copy over the files to an External HDD that are important.

I can't be arsed - I just want to be able to restore if needed.

It now seems that I am backing up but I have no idea why it comes up with
"The last backup did not complete successfully "

This has been going on for ages and thought I would have a go at finding out why and still no nearer.

Windows7 and myself haven't done too well with MS backups either, nine times out off ten they fail.

I've done a little better with the image but then I keep getting a nag screen about restoring files every time I boot.

I had to fix something today but as it happens I'd made a backup with true image and Macrium Reflect. I used true image to restore it as I only I had a boot disc for True Image.
It all went fine, later I let MS install updates and on reboot my internet wasn't working and of course restore failed. I may as well just turn it off for what it's worth. Turns out it was a external issue so didn't matter in the end.

For me there's plenty of room at least 40gig and , I don't see an error on screen.
Is there a log made when doing a restore also it was a fresh install so there isn't much installed that could force it to go wrong.
Also not just happening with this install of W7 but all of them I made on this PC they just work when the feel like it.

Manual?! -_-

Invest in decent backup software, such as Macrium Reflect.

I do have it now - Just need someone to come round and show me how to use it.

I keep opening it up and wonder where do I start. - It might be easy for some but I am lost.

I will probably get there in the end though

On Macrium simply click 'image' on the c: drive and backup to another disk. I set mine to backup a full image every week at the same time.
