backup drive dead?

ive had a maxtor 80gb hdd as a backup drive for about 5 years now i booted up this afternoon to find an error message something allong the lines of unable to boot insert system disk press enter to restart

not having a system disk i browned my kecks and seeing as this coppy of xp came pre installed i just poped in the recovery disk and formated (was about due for one anyway) only to find that it still wouldnt boot after install
so

stripped it all out
new ide
only put back the master drive and it worked!! re did the dual boot

right ok so now ive got master hard drive partitiond 2 coppys of xp installed 1 to mess up lol

plugged in my backup drive and its not detected at all pc wont boot "unable to boot insert system disk press enter to restart"

any ideas would be most apreciated as this drive is full of unreplacable junk ty
 
In the BIOS, it will have the option for which HDD you want to boot from. (On my BIOS, there is a separate menu where you get to choose which HDD out of a list of just HDDs rather than HDD / CDROM / Floppy etc) You have to choose the right one, otherwise it looks for system files from the wrong disk (which there wouldn't be any) and displays that System Disk error message.

Also, remember to set the jumpers correctly for Master/Slave of the IDE channels.
 
will have to check the bios out in mine there is hdd 0 hdd 1 hdd 2 ive allways selected hdd 0 but i suppose if the disk has failed in some way it willl hang on that disk? jumpers are definatly set right tho
