Hi guys,

So some of you may remember a week back I asked about backing up exchange and most of you recommended Backup Exec.

So, I found we had a copy of 11d floating around and installed it on a dedicated backup server.

I've installed the remote agent on the Exchange server too.

I've set up a job to back up the information store but it fails as it says it needs a backup to disk folder that is located on a local NTFS disk (as in, on the backup server).

I mean, WHAT?

Whats the best solution here?

Guessing you're backing up to a NAS or something. Several options

Tools - Options - Exchange - Deselect enable GRT restore from information store backups

You loose the email level backups though

Or, back up to the servers local drive, then back up the backup files to the NAS, thats clumsy though.

Or, if you have a support agreement, just upgrade to 12.5 - I'm doing brick level backups to my NAS no problem

If you're not backup up to NAS, chances are the drive isnt NTFS (the clue's in the error message) - so do a convert X: /FS:NTFS

Yeah, its this, basically I want to backup to a seperate server / NAS box. So if I deselect GRT restore I loose the ability to do email level backups, as in, individual emails?

Is there where ExMerge can come in to play?

Correct.

In the case of restoring, your best bet is to set up a recovery storage group and either merge it to an existing mailbox or associate it to another account to pull out the email(s) you need.

Remember you need about 110% space overhead as you need to recover the entire mailbox store and is obviously much quicker.

If you do get the ability to upgrade to 12.5 I'd reccomend that - the above method is a PITA if someone has lost one email

You could also look at http://www.mailarchiva.com/ to archive your emails for free, in addition to or in place of your backup. That way your backup can be for a full recovery and you have the archive for individual emails

TBH with deleted item retention properly set up you should rarely need to restore single items.

If you also have an archival system of some sort you should never have to.

@Lucero

I had a similar issue myself with our company setup with 11d to an exchange 2007 server. I resolved this and got the backup to work by installing the exchange management console on the server the backup software is located (nothing else is needed via this console as long as you can remote connect to your exchange server) and it should them backup correctly. Apparently the console is required by backup exec to make exchange backups.

Not sure if this is of any help but hey...

No problem and the only other thing i'd mention as i didn't see it mentioned above is you need the exchange agent addon for 11d. See below for the symantec website: http://www.symantec.com/business/products/agents_options.jsp?pcid=&pvid=57_1

* Backup Exec Agent for Microsoft Exchange

Backup Exec Agent for Exchange provides continuous data protection for Exchange Server and revolutionizes data protection and recovery by eliminating the daily backup window for Exchange backup jobs while still allowing recovery of individual messages, folders and mailboxes—in seconds with patent-pending Granular Recovery Technology. Additionally, administrators do not need to run a mailbox (or MAPI) backup, which significantly reduces the number of backups, time and cost required to protect Exchange. With Granular Recovery Technology the enhanced Exchange Agent can granularly recover from a single full backup, eliminating the need for multiple Exchange backups.

OK, thanks.

Just to clarify though, I alreay have 11d and the Exchange Agent both installed on the same box. I have now installed the Exchange Management conosole on the backup box too and its found my exchange org easily enough.

It still wont let me highlight "recover individual messages" though and moans that it needs a local NTFS data store for this task.

This is exchange 2003 btw

Any ideas?

The requirement of the management for brick level backups to a non-local volume is for Exchange 2007 AFAIK
