I would like to put a decent backup system in place and was thinking of having an ethernet HD that could accept Time Machine backups as well as serve iTunes content. Preferably raid 1 for extra redundancy.

Actually I like the idea of a Windows Home Server as a target, but probably a bit pricey and not sure on the time machine bit either.

What do you guys recommend, (cheap as poss)?

A mate of mine threw together a PC and runs OpenFiler on it, which works well with AFP and Time Machine apparantly. Your mileage may vary but it seems to be a good start.

If you have an old PC and some disks then openfiler is a good choice.

If you have cash a Drobo (+ DroboShare) is good especially considering you can chuck any size disk in.

I personally use a USB enclosure connected to my Airport Extreme - backed up to archive storage or other hard disks from time to time.

Openfiler sounds interesting, I do have a PC that I was going to flog, but maybe I can put it to better use?!!?!

I'll get googling and find out more about it. Thanks for the tip!

OpenFiler is awesome. Trully shows what the open source community can do. It supports such technologies as iSCSI.

Ideally a raid card or onboard raid is needed but I do belive it can do software raid.
